What beam house chemicals are
Beam house chemicals are the auxiliaries used from raw hide or skin through soaking, unhairing, liming, deliming, bating, degreasing and wetting-back, before chrome or vegetable tannage. This is where dirt, salt, grease and epidermis are opened and the collagen network is prepared. Dyna Glycols supplies named beam-house grades for preservation, soaking, wetting, liming, deliming and degreasing, including APEO-free wetters aligned with modern tannery specifications.
A beam-house mistake shows later as drawn grain, empty bellies, grease stains, putrefaction or high effluent nitrogen. The Dyna range is built so a tannery can specify a bactericide for short-term hide holding, a compact soaking agent with self-regulating pH, an amphoteric wetter/dispersant, lime assistants, ammonium-free deliming and solvent-free degreasers, then confirm each grade on pelt, wet-blue or E.I. stock in the customer’s drums.
How Dyna Glycols manufactures beam house chemicals
Liquid surfactants and powders are manufactured to agreed pH, solids, ionic character and dilution behaviour. Degreasers based on fatty alcohol alkoxylates are produced on the same ethoxylation capability used for industrial nonionics, then finished for tannery floats. Powders such as deliming and compact soak are blended and released against pH and appearance.
APEO-free equivalents of historical NP-9.5 wetters are available when the tannery specification bans alkyl phenol ethoxylates. Solvent-free degreasing is the default recommendation for Vendigris EWP-type duty unless a solvent-containing grade is still written on the process sheet.
Typical grades in this range
The named beam-house products below are the catalogue starting points. Open each product page for characteristics, floats and shelf life.
- VENPRESERVE — bactericide for short-term preservation of fresh hides and skins in soak
- VENSOAK C — compact soaking agent with self pH regulation (about 9.0–9.5)
- VENWET A — amphoteric emulsifying and dispersing agent (imidazoline type)
- GIP 7425 — non-ionic modified polyglycol ether detergent for soak, bate and wet-back
- VENLIME A — liming assistant to improve lime dissolution and flatter grain
- VENDELIME Z — ammonium-salt-free deliming powder for compact, bright pelts
- VENDIGRIS WP — crypto-anionic degreaser for pelt, wet-blue and E.I., including sheep
- VENDIGRIS EWP — APEO-free, solvent-free fatty alcohol alkoxylate degreaser/soaker
- APF 9.5 — APEO-free equivalent of NP 9.5 wetting duty
Where beam house chemicals are used
Fresh hides: wash off dung and blood, then VENPRESERVE in soak or as a spray for holding up to a few days. Salted stock: VENSOAK C in the main soak to even up take-up and protect flanks. Wetting and scud: GIP 7425 or VENWET A to disperse natural fat and speed soak without harming bate enzymes.
Liming: VENLIME A at the start and a small addition at the end to reduce wrinkles. Deliming: VENDELIME Z after a thorough wash, in a shorter float than conventional ammonium salts, for both hides and skins; it can also mask chrome in pickle. Degreasing: VENDIGRIS WP on sheep and greasy wet-blue; VENDIGRIS EWP where APEO and solvent must be absent, including fur skins and waterproofing routes.
Wet-back of dried wet-blue and cleaning of wet-blue before dye-house work use GIP 7425 and the degreasers. Dosages are always on the stated weight basis (fresh hide, salted, pelt or shaved) given on each product page.
How to specify beam house chemicals
Name the stage (preserve, soak, lime, delime, degrease, wet-back), the raw material (bovine, calf, goat, sheep, fur), and any ban on APEO, solvent or ammonium. Share float temperature, pH and whether the stock is pelt, pickle, wet-blue or E.I.
If replacing a competitor NP-9.5 wetter, request APF 9.5 or VENDIGRIS EWP and run a paired drum trial. For deliming, state whether nitrogen in effluent is limited so VENDELIME Z can be specified instead of ammonium salts.
Quality, documents and supply
Each beam-house grade is released against the tests on its TDS: appearance, pH, solids or active content, and ionic character. SDS and COA follow company verification. Laboratory or tannery samples should be run on the actual hide type before a bulk change of process.
Store liquids above their pour point and powders dry. Follow each product’s shelf-life (typically 6–12 months in closed containers). Warm and mix set surfactants until uniform before charging the drum.
Practical notes on beam house chemicals
Beam-house floats are alkaline in soak and lime and then move through deliming toward pickle acidity. A product that is stable in lime may not be the right degreaser in pickle salt. Always read the stability line (acid, alkali, salt, hard water, chrome) on the named grade.
VENDELIME Z is acidic (pH of 1% solution about 1–3) and ammonium-free, so it does not add nitrogen load. It needs a lower float and a good pre-wash. Do not treat it as a drop-in weight-for-weight copy of ammonium sulphate.
VENDIGRIS EWP is essentially 100% active fatty alcohol alkoxylate, APEO-free and solvent-free, low foam, and pH-tolerant. Offer it first when the tannery is rewriting degreasing for ecolabel or wastewater reasons.
GIP 7425 is a 25% solids non-ionic wetter. It is useful in pickle before acid to help tensile, and in fatliquor to keep fat from crashing. It is not a fatliquor itself.
VENWET A is amphoteric and is often used in pickle or chrome to disperse natural fat and to stabilise fatliquor blends. Dose on shaved weight or as a percentage of the fatliquor, as the product page states.
A complete beam-house package from Dyna Glycols can be sampled as a set: preserve, soak, wet, lime, delime, degrease. That is faster than swapping one chemical at a time when the tannery is changing hide source.
Ordering and evaluating beam house chemicals
Dyna Glycols supports beam house chemicals with laboratory samples, current SDS, TDS and COA from the Kandla SEZ manufacturing network. Tell us the intended application, the substrate, the required moles or molecular weight, and any limits on colour, odour, cloud point, hydroxyl value, pH or residual feedstock. A matching catalogue grade of beam house chemicals in the Leather Chemicals family can then be confirmed, or a custom batch can be planned on the ethoxylation, esterification or related plant.
When you evaluate beam house chemicals, send the competitor grade if one exists, the bath or emulsion conditions, and the tests your receiving laboratory will run. Pack options for beam house chemicals typically include drums, IBCs and bulk where the viscosity and melting point of the selected grade allow safe handling from the Leather Chemicals manufacturing line.
A first order of beam house chemicals is easier when the purchase specification lists identity tests, not only a local trade name. Hydroxyl value, saponification value, acid value, cloud point, pH, water, colour and appearance are the numbers the Kandla QA laboratory can lock. If your QC uses a different solvent or a different cloud-point electrolyte for beam house chemicals, write that method on the order so the COA speaks the same language.
