Wetting is a speed, not a chemistry family

A wetting agent drives the liquor onto a surface that would otherwise hold an air film: greasy cotton, waxy leaf, mill scale, pigment agglomerates or hide in soak. In development work the metric is contact angle or Draves / canvas-disc time in the real bath, not a catalogue HLB alone. Two grades with a similar HLB can wet at very different speeds because the hydrophobe, mole distribution and foam film differ.

Dyna Glycols supplies wetting from several families: Fatty Alcohol Ethoxylates as the APEO-free workhorse, Alkyl Phenol Ethoxylates where an existing industrial specification still names them, Sulfosuccinates for flash wetting at low dose, and EO/PO Block Co-Polymers when the machine cannot tolerate foam. The family is chosen after the substrate and the foam limit, not before.

Textile, leather and agro wetting

Textile Chemicals pretreatment is the classic wetting brief. A penetrating agent that works on a jigger may flood a jet. Always state machine type, liquor ratio, fibre (knit, woven, terry, cheese, garment) and whether the bath is alkaline scour or near-neutral dye. Historical nonyl phenol 9.5-mole wetters are replaced by a fatty alcohol ethoxylate in a similar cloud-point band when APEO is restricted. Matching cloud point in the actual liquor is faster than rewriting the whole recipe.

Leather soak and degrease need wetters that open the hide without tearing grain. Agro tank-mix adjuvants that must wet waxy leaves sometimes use fatty amine ethoxylates for substantivity; say if that adhesion is required so an alcohol ethoxylate is not offered by mistake. Share whether the system is an emulsifiable concentrate or a spray mixture — those are different wetting jobs.

Industrial surfaces and low-foam wetting

Metal cleaning and electroplating baths are high-electrolyte. 2-Ethylhexyl sulphate and low-mole alcohol ethoxylates wet through salt that would salt out a high-mole non-ionic. Coatings and paper de-inking need pigment or ink wetting without a foam head that starves the pump. Reverse-block EO/PO grades and selected propoxylates cover that low-foam wetting window.

Cloud point in distilled water is a poor predictor. Salt and alkali pull cloud point down; the grade can haze or lose wetting in the real cleaner even if the TDS looks fine. Quote temperature, electrolyte and pH with the sample request so the mole can sit in the intended phase.

What to put on the enquiry

Name the surface, the soil or finish oil, bath temperature, pH, hardness and foam limit. If you already run an NP-9.5 or a named alcohol ethoxylate, send the cloud point measured in your liquor, not only the supplier TDS. Dyna Glycols can sample an alcohol-based wetter next to an alkyl phenol grade when a mill is changing policy, without swapping families unless you ask.

Specification checklist

Put the application, the substrate, temperature, pH and any APEO or formaldehyde limit on the first enquiry. INCI or chemical names, cloud point, hydroxyl value, saponification value and colour are the numbers Dyna Glycols can lock on a TDS for this Wetting agents topic. A warehouse nickname is not a specification.

Samples and documents

Request a laboratory sample of the related Wetting agents grade together with the current SDS and TDS. The certificate of analysis is issued for the shipping lot after manufacture at Kandla SEZ. Once the trial is approved, freeze the identity tests so later drums of this chemistry match the article you evaluated.
