Adhesive Chemicals

Dyna Glycols manufactures surfactants and process aids for adhesive emulsion polymerisation, wetting, dispersing, foam control and selected PU cross-linking.

What adhesive chemicals are

Dyna Glycols manufactures surfactants and process aids for adhesive emulsion polymerisation, wetting, dispersing, foam control and selected PU cross-linking. The same ethoxylation, sulphation and EO/PO plants used for coatings supply alkyl ether sulphates, alkyl phenol ethoxylates, sulfated and phosphated ethoxylates, fatty alcohol ethoxylates and low-foam EO/PO polymers.

A polymerisation surfactant, a pigment or filler dispersant and a defoamer are different duties. Write whether the grade is for the reactor, the mill, let-down or a PU coat, and whether APEO is allowed. The paints page covers mill-base and architectural coating duties in more detail; this page is the adhesive and polymerisation map.

How Dyna Glycols manufactures adhesive chemicals

Anionic polymerisation surfactants are finished to agreed active content, pH and unsulfated matter. Non-ionic emulsifiers are released against cloud point and hydroxyl value. EO/PO grades for low foam and knockdown are released against MW or cloud point as written on the TDS.

OPS-25 (octyl phenol ethoxylate sulphate, 35–45% active) is a catalogue anionic for latex systems that still specify that hydrophobe. APEO-free alcohol ether sulphates are the substitute path — not assumed drop-in copies. Triethanolamine 85% and 98% is supplied as an organic neutraliser. Propoxylated amines are quoted as PU metal-complexing / cross-linking intermediates.

Typical grades in this range

Typical families for adhesive development are listed below. Intermediate moles and custom actives are manufactured on request.

  • Emulsion polymerisation: alkyl ether sulphates; ethoxylated alkyl phenols (non-ionic); sulfonated ethoxylated alkyl phenols; phosphated ethoxylated alkyl phenols; OPS-25 at 35–45% active
  • Emulsifiers and foam control: alkyl phenol ethoxylates; EO/PO low-foam wetters; EO/PO foam-suppressant polymers; non-silicone defoamers; alkyl-capped EO/PO anti-foam polymers
  • Dispersants: vegetable-oil anti-settling; polycarboxylic anti-settling; fatty alcohol ethoxylates; alkyl phenol ethoxylates; acrylic co-polymer sequestering/dispersing; acrylic homo-polymer dispersants; naphthalene sulfonate levelling/dispersing; EO/PO dispersants
  • Organic neutralisers: triethanolamine 85% and 98%
  • PU coatings: propoxylated amine cross-linking / metal-complexing intermediates

Where adhesive chemicals are used

Vinyl acetate, acrylate and styrene-acrylate adhesive latices use a non-ionic plus an anionic pair to set particle size and shear stability. Pressure-sensitive and packaging adhesives use selected low-foam EO/PO wetters so foam does not trap in the coat. Filler and pigment concentrates use polymeric or sulfonate dispersants to hold grind viscosity.

PU and two-pack coats use propoxylated amine intermediates where the brief names a metal-complexing cross-linker rather than a surfactant. TEA is a pH balancer and intermediate, not a binder.

How to specify adhesive chemicals

State monomer system, APEO policy, ionic type, active or cloud-point window, and whether the grade is for polymerisation, mill, let-down or PU. Share electrolyte, pH, foam test and filler or pigment if dispersing.

For OPS-25 or an NP ether sulphate, attach the current active, pH and unsulfated matter. If moving off APEO, say so so an alcohol ether sulphate can be sampled beside the incumbent.

Quality, documents and supply

Lots are released against the certificate tests on the TDS. SDS and COA follow verification. Latex stability must be confirmed in the customer reactor; a bottle foam test is not a polymerisation trial.

Store sulphated anionics cool. Warm high-mole pastes until uniform. Follow the SDS for concentrated wetters and TEA.

Practical notes on adhesive chemicals

APEO and APEO-free polymerisation surfactants are not assumed copies. Particle size and coagulum can move when the hydrophobe changes. Run a paired reactor trial.

Naphthalene sulfonates disperse and level; they are not primary foamers. Acrylic homo-polymers sequester hardness. Do not order one for the other duty.

Related pages: paints and coating chemicals, sulphates and sulfonates, phosphate esters, alkyl phenol ethoxylates, fatty alcohol ethoxylates, EO/PO block copolymers. Request a sample with the monomer and the APEO rule.

Non-silicone defoamers and alkyl-capped EO/PO anti-foams are chosen when silicone is banned in the adhesive. Dose and addition point still change cratering.

OPS-25 active window (35–45%) belongs on the order. A 25% cut is a different product.

English is the source language for APEO and active-content claims.

Ordering and evaluating adhesive chemicals

Dyna Glycols supports adhesive chemicals with laboratory samples, current SDS, TDS and COA from the Kandla SEZ manufacturing network. Tell us the intended application, the substrate, the required moles or molecular weight, and any limits on colour, odour, cloud point, hydroxyl value, pH or residual feedstock. A matching catalogue grade of adhesive chemicals in the Adhesive Chemicals family can then be confirmed, or a custom batch can be planned on the ethoxylation, esterification or related plant.

When you evaluate adhesive chemicals, send the competitor grade if one exists, the bath or emulsion conditions, and the tests your receiving laboratory will run. Pack options for adhesive chemicals typically include drums, IBCs and bulk where the viscosity and melting point of the selected grade allow safe handling from the Adhesive Chemicals manufacturing line.

A first order of adhesive chemicals is easier when the purchase specification lists identity tests, not only a local trade name. Hydroxyl value, saponification value, acid value, cloud point, pH, water, colour and appearance are the numbers the Kandla QA laboratory can lock. If your QC uses a different solvent or a different cloud-point electrolyte for adhesive chemicals, write that method on the order so the COA speaks the same language.

Custom lots of adhesive chemicals are quoted after the hydrophobe or acid/alcohol pair, the target analytical window, the annual volume and the pack. Pilot batches are available when a catalogue point in the Adhesive Chemicals range is close but not exact. Once a trial lot is approved, that TDS should be frozen so the tenth delivery of adhesive chemicals matches the first approved drum.

Storage of adhesive chemicals should follow the SDS: keep containers closed, protect hygroscopic grades from moisture, and warm high-melt or high-mole grades until uniform before sampling. FIFO rotation protects colour and odour. If a drum of adhesive chemicals has frozen or separated in transit, homogenise it before charging a batch; do not decant only the liquid layer.

Application advice for adhesive chemicals is given against the process you describe, not as a universal recipe. Share machine type, temperature, pH, electrolytes, fibre or hide type, and any ban on APEO, formaldehyde or food-contact lists. Dyna Glycols can then sample adhesive chemicals alone or as a pair with a sister grade from the same Adhesive Chemicals family so compatibility is checked in one evaluation.

Use the sample form and name Adhesive Chemicals together with the intended process, substrate and any EO/PO, HLB, cloud-point or active-content window. Laboratory quantities ship after a short company check, with SDS and TDS when those boxes are ticked. A catalogue grade can be confirmed, or a custom batch planned on the Kandla plants.

Yes. SDS, TDS and COA for Adhesive Chemicals are issued to identified companies after a short verification — they are not open downloads. COA is lot-specific; if a commercial lot has not been allocated, typical TDS data is sent first and the COA follows the production batch. Request files from the documents form.
