Leather wax emulsions are aqueous dispersions of synthetic or natural waxes used in finish to give slip, fill, plate and emboss behaviour, and a silky or waxy handle. They are not the main film-former; they modify acrylic and PU seasons in base coat, ground and aqueous sealers.
What leather wax emulsion are
Leather wax emulsions are aqueous dispersions of synthetic or natural waxes used in finish to give slip, fill, plate and emboss behaviour, and a silky or waxy handle. They are not the main film-former; they modify acrylic and PU seasons in base coat, ground and aqueous sealers. Dyna Glycols offers VENWAX S, a soft synthetic-wax emulsion for upholstery and garment grounds and for base coats that must plate and emboss cleanly.
Wax in finish reduces tack of soft acrylics, improves plate release, fills minor grain defects and changes the light scatter of the surface. Too much wax can hurt rub fastness and adhesion of later coats. The catalogue grade is therefore specified by solids, pH and recommended parts in a season next to pigment and binder, not as a standalone top.
How Dyna Glycols manufactures leather wax emulsion
VENWAX S is produced as a white to cream pourable liquid at about 13% solids, pH about 8.5, freely soluble in water. The wax is synthetic. Batches are released against appearance, solids and pH.
Emulsions must be protected from frost and from contamination with solvents or strong electrolytes that can break the dispersion. Stir before taking from the drum.
Typical grades in this range
VENWAX S is the standard soft wax emulsion. Custom wax hardness or solids can be discussed for special plate or pull-up effects.
- VENWAX S — soft synthetic wax emulsion; silky handle, fill, plating and embossing
- Use in base coat and aqueous sealing coats; upholstery and garment grounds
Where leather wax emulsion are used
Upholstery base-coat example from the product page: 100 parts pigment, 30 parts VENWAX S, 200–300 parts water, 100 parts acrylic binder, 150 parts PU binder, 50 parts protein binder; apply two to three coats. That recipe is a starting season, not a universal formula.
Garment grounds use wax emulsion for a filled, sewable surface before colour. Shoe upper may use a smaller wax fraction when plate and mill are required without a greasy top.
Aqueous sealing coats before lacquer can include VENWAX S to reduce tack into the iron. Always check wet rub after wax is added; compensate with binder or a stronger NC/PU top if rub falls.
How to specify leather wax emulsion
State article, whether the wax is for base, ground or sealer, required plate/emboss temperature, and the acrylic/PU ratio already in use. Share solids of the current wax if matching.
If a harder, more carnauba-like slip or a pull-up oil-wax is required, say so; VENWAX S is a soft synthetic emulsion, not a pull-up oil.
Quality, documents and supply
Lots are released against appearance, solids and pH. SDS and COA follow verification. Plate, feel and rub should be tested on the customer season after the intended ironing.
Store frost-free; typical shelf life six months. If the emulsion separates slightly, stir; if it has broken into curds after frost, do not use it in a critical finish.
Practical notes on leather wax emulsion
Wax is a modifier. Changing VENWAX S parts by ten in a season will change tack and gloss more than changing binder by the same amount. Keep a written season card.
Protein binder in the example season adds another handle. If the tannery is protein-free, omit that line and rebalance acrylic/PU rather than overdosing wax.
Compatibility: add wax to the water/binder mix with stirring. Dumping wax into a strongly solvent top is not the use; WS lacquer is a different phase.
Embossing: wax helps the plate release and can hide minor defects. It will not hide a loose empty belly; that is a retan/fatliquor problem (see VENTAN fillers).
Silky handle from VENWAX S is a finish effect. If the crust is already harsh, fix fatliquor (VENSOFT SFC/CWS) first, then use less wax in finish.
Dyna Glycols samples VENWAX S with VENRES 10/20/76 and VENOLAC LMF so plating, gloss and rub can be judged together.
Ordering and evaluating leather wax emulsion
Dyna Glycols supports leather wax emulsion with laboratory samples, current SDS, TDS and COA from the Kandla SEZ manufacturing network. Tell us the intended application, the substrate, the required moles or molecular weight, and any limits on colour, odour, cloud point, hydroxyl value, pH or residual feedstock. A matching catalogue grade of leather wax emulsion in the Leather Chemicals family can then be confirmed, or a custom batch can be planned on the ethoxylation, esterification or related plant.
When you evaluate leather wax emulsion, send the competitor grade if one exists, the bath or emulsion conditions, and the tests your receiving laboratory will run. Pack options for leather wax emulsion typically include drums, IBCs and bulk where the viscosity and melting point of the selected grade allow safe handling from the Leather Chemicals manufacturing line.
A first order of leather wax emulsion is easier when the purchase specification lists identity tests, not only a local trade name. Hydroxyl value, saponification value, acid value, cloud point, pH, water, colour and appearance are the numbers the Kandla QA laboratory can lock. If your QC uses a different solvent or a different cloud-point electrolyte for leather wax emulsion, write that method on the order so the COA speaks the same language.
Custom lots of leather wax emulsion are quoted after the hydrophobe or acid/alcohol pair, the target analytical window, the annual volume and the pack. Pilot batches are available when a catalogue point in the Leather Chemicals range is close but not exact. Once a trial lot is approved, that TDS should be frozen so the tenth delivery of leather wax emulsion matches the first approved drum.
Storage of leather wax emulsion should follow the SDS: keep containers closed, protect hygroscopic grades from moisture, and warm high-melt or high-mole grades until uniform before sampling. FIFO rotation protects colour and odour. If a drum of leather wax emulsion has frozen or separated in transit, homogenise it before charging a batch; do not decant only the liquid layer.
Application advice for leather wax emulsion is given against the process you describe, not as a universal recipe. Share machine type, temperature, pH, electrolytes, fibre or hide type, and any ban on APEO, formaldehyde or food-contact lists. Dyna Glycols can then sample leather wax emulsion alone or as a pair with a sister grade from the same Leather Chemicals family so compatibility is checked in one evaluation.
