What toll manufacturing means for surfactants
Toll manufacturing is contract production of a defined chemical on the customer's brief, not a warehouse nickname and not a finished consumer formula. At Dyna Glycols that usually means adding ethylene oxide or propylene oxide to a named alcohol, acid, amine, oil or resin; esterifying a named acid–alcohol pair; or finishing a second step such as phosphation or amidification after the ethoxylate is locked. The plant at Kandla Special Economic Zone already manufactures the catalogue families — Ethoxylates, Alkoxylates, Esters, Propoxylates, Amides, Phosphate Esters and related anionics — so a toll batch uses the same stainless-steel reactors, distillation and 24/7 QA, with your identity tests on the TDS.
Toll manufacturing is different from buying a stock mole off the shelf. Catalogue grades such as lauryl 7, NP-9.5 or PEG 400 remain available when they fit. When cloud point, hydroxyl value, monoester content or residual feedstock must sit inside a customer window — or when the hydrophobe is customer-supplied — the contact form option “Custom development / toll manufacture” is the correct path. Dyna Glycols will not reverse-engineer a patented molecule or a secret blend beyond what is disclosed.
Toll manufacturing versus custom synthesis versus custom moles
Use this toll manufacturing page when the commercial question is “will you run my campaign on your plant under my specification and volume?” Secrecy, annual tonnes, pack and pilot-before-plant belong here. Use the custom synthesis guide when the question is “can you make this named ethoxylate, EO/PO architecture or ester stoichiometry?” Use the custom moles guide when you already know the family and only need an intermediate mole or a frozen analytical window next to a catalogue card.
All three routes use the same Kandla reactors. The brief that differs is commercial scope (toll), molecular definition (custom synthesis), or mole fine-tuning (custom moles). Pick one primary page for the enquiry and attach the TDS; do not paste all three titles into the subject line.
Chemistries suited to toll manufacturing
Others Ethoxylates is the made-to-order ethoxylate heading: custom synthetic alcohols, mixed hydrophobes and customer-specified EO ratios that sit beside fatty alcohol, alkyl phenol, fatty acid, fatty amine and oil ethoxylates. Pilot alkoxylation before the main 3,000–25,000 kg vessels lets a development grade be trialled without committing the large reactor. EO/PO block order, reverse-block low-foam types and propoxylates follow the same plant logic when foam or cloud point must move off a straight ethoxylate.
Ester toll work needs the acid–alcohol pair and mono versus di versus tri ratio, not “an ester like the last drum”. Glyceryl, glycol, PEG, polyglycerol and sorbitan esters are finished to acid value, saponification value and colour. Phosphate esters and selected sulphation or sulfonation windows are second-process toll jobs: residual moisture and catalyst from the ethoxylate must already sit inside that window, or the second step fails for reasons that look like “the plant cannot make it”. Amides (CMEA, CDEA, ethoxylated amides) and selected carbamates are separate unit operations — name the reaction family on day one.
Where toll grades are used
Formulators in Agro Chemicals EC/EW packs, Textile Chemicals wet processing, Leather Chemicals, Paints and Coating Chemicals, Paper Chemicals, Refinery & Oilfield Chemicals demulsifier resins, Construction Chemicals grinding and plasticiser intermediates, and Personal Care Chemicals or Pharma Chemicals adjacent emulsifiers often need a mole or ester that is close to catalogue but not exact. The surfactant or intermediate is still released against cloud point, hydroxyl value, saponification value, %EO or appearance — not against a finished pesticide, drug or cosmetic claim.
Dyna Glycols will not invent FSSAI, FDA, USP, EP, COSMOS or CIB listings for a toll surfactant. If the receiving laboratory runs pharmacopoeia-style or food-pack tests, list those tests on the enquiry so they can be built into release. Industrial TDS language is the default; food-adjacent and pharma-adjacent packs are named documentation sets, not silent upgrades of a textile scour.
What to put on a toll manufacturing brief
Name the starter (alcohol cut, phenol, acid, amine, oil, polyol or resin), whether the hydrophobe is customer-supplied, the oxide (EO, PO or both) or the acid–alcohol pair, moles or the analytical target (cloud point method and electrolyte, hydroxyl value, molecular weight, %EO, monoester content), annual volume, pack (drum, IBC, bulk) and any APEO, colour, odour or water limit. Say if a later sulphation or phosphation step is planned. Attach the current TDS or the identity tests your QC will run.
Secrecy agreements belong on the quote when the hydrophobe or the window is confidential. Lead time for a first toll lot is longer than a catalogue drum: pilot, freeze the TDS, then plant scale. Once the trial succeeds, freeze the purchase specification so the tenth delivery matches the approved sample. Request the laboratory sample with SDS and TDS; COA follows the shipping lot after manufacture at Kandla SEZ.
Toll manufacturing versus catalogue supply
Use catalogue supply when the published mole and TDS already pass your application test. Use toll manufacturing when you need an intermediate mole, a customer hydrophobe, a narrow versus conventional mole distribution, a second-step phosphate or amide, or a frozen window that is not on the public card. Both routes ship with SDS, TDS and lot COA after company verification. The difference is who wrote the analytical window — the catalogue, or your brief.
Specification checklist
Put the application, the substrate, temperature, pH and any APEO or formaldehyde limit on the first enquiry. INCI or chemical names, cloud point, hydroxyl value, saponification value and colour are the numbers Dyna Glycols can lock on a TDS for this Toll manufacturing topic. A warehouse nickname is not a specification.
Samples and documents
Request a laboratory sample of the related Toll manufacturing grade together with the current SDS and TDS. The certificate of analysis is issued for the shipping lot after manufacture at Kandla SEZ. Once the trial is approved, freeze the identity tests so later drums of this chemistry match the article you evaluated.
