Dyes Fixers

Leather dye fixers are cationic after-treatments that improve the wet fastness of anionic (acid and direct) dyeings on chrome, vegetable and combination-tanned leather. They sit at the end of the dye-house sequence, after the dye is exhausted, and reduce bleeding in water, wash and perspiration tests.

What leather dye fixers are

Leather dye fixers are cationic after-treatments that improve the wet fastness of anionic (acid and direct) dyeings on chrome, vegetable and combination-tanned leather. They sit at the end of the dye-house sequence, after the dye is exhausted, and reduce bleeding in water, wash and perspiration tests. Dyna Glycols offers formaldehyde-containing methylol-amide types and concentrated non-formaldehyde aliphatic-amine types.

Cationic fixers add a positive charge at the fibre surface that holds anionic dye. That same charge can hinder later anionic finish coats if the leather is grain-finished. The tannery must choose a fixer chemistry and a dose that meet the fastness specification without blocking the finishing season. Non-formaldehyde grades are specified where residual formaldehyde on the article is limited.

How Dyna Glycols manufactures leather dye fixers

Liquid fixers are manufactured to agreed solids, pH and ionic character. VENFIX DF is a methylol-amide cationic at about 50% solids and acidic pH. VENFIX NFDF is a concentrated aliphatic-amine derivative, non-formaldehyde, at minimum 65% solids and near-neutral pH.

Concentrated grades can be diluted by the formulator. End-use tanneries usually buy the ready liquid and apply it on shaved or dry weight as written on the TDS.

Typical grades in this range

Choose formaldehyde vs non-formaldehyde first, then dose on the depth of shade.

  • VENFIX DF (VENFIX-DF) — cationic methylol-amide fixer for anionic dyes; wet-fastness improvement
  • VENFIX NFDF (VENFIX-NFDF) — concentrated cationic non-formaldehyde aliphatic amine fixer
  • Related concentrated non-formaldehyde types (VINFIX SD / VINIFIX NFDF style) on request

Where leather dye fixers are used

After anionic dyeing of shoe upper, garment, lining and upholstery, VENFIX DF is typically 1–1.5% on shaved weight or 2–3% on dry weight. It improves water, wash and perspiration fastness of acid and direct dyeings.

VENFIX NFDF is used at about 0.5–2% depending on shade depth, preferably at pH 5.5–6.5 and room temperature. It is chosen when free formaldehyde must be zero, and when light fastness and handle must not be impaired the way some conventional fixers do.

Corrected-grain and heavily finished articles still need a fixer trial, because a strongly cationic surface can reduce penetration of anionic binders and pigments. Suede and nubuck, which are not always resin-finished, often tolerate cationic after-treatments more easily.

How to specify leather dye fixers

State the tannage, the dye class, the fastness tests (water, wash, perspiration, wet rub), and any formaldehyde limit on the finished article. Say whether the leather will receive an anionic finish.

If the current fixer is a named competitor non-formaldehyde amine, request VENFIX NFDF and match solids. If it is a classic methylol fixer, start with VENFIX DF.

Quality, documents and supply

Lots are released against appearance, pH, solids and cationic character. SDS and COA follow verification. Fastness must be confirmed on the tannery’s dye recipe; a bottle test is not enough.

Store cool in closed containers. Typical shelf life is six months. Do not freeze. Mix before use if the liquid has stood.

Practical notes on leather dye fixers

Fixers do not replace good exhaustion. If dye is still in the float, fix it after a proper acidification and rinse, not as a way to hide a poorly exhausted bath.

VENFIX DF caution on the product page is important: grain leathers finished with anionic products can show poor finish penetration after a cationic surface treatment. Reduce dose or skip fixer on those articles if finish adhesion fails.

Non-formaldehyde VENFIX NFDF is the usual specification for automotive and children’s articles where formaldehyde is audited. Confirm the test method the brand uses (extraction vs chamber) so the tannery laboratory reports the same number.

Handle and shade: some older fixers flatten shade or harshen suede. NFDF is positioned not to impair light fastness or feel; still run a side-by-side crust.

Compatibility is with cationics and nonionics. Do not mix the fixer into an anionic fatliquor remaining in the same bath without a drain and rinse.

Dyna Glycols can sample DF and NFDF together so the tannery can keep one process and only swap the fixer where formaldehyde is the constraint.

Ordering and evaluating leather dye fixers

Dyna Glycols supports leather dye fixers with laboratory samples, current SDS, TDS and COA from the Kandla SEZ manufacturing network. Tell us the intended application, the substrate, the required moles or molecular weight, and any limits on colour, odour, cloud point, hydroxyl value, pH or residual feedstock. A matching catalogue grade of leather dye fixers in the Leather Chemicals family can then be confirmed, or a custom batch can be planned on the ethoxylation, esterification or related plant.

When you evaluate leather dye fixers, send the competitor grade if one exists, the bath or emulsion conditions, and the tests your receiving laboratory will run. Pack options for leather dye fixers typically include drums, IBCs and bulk where the viscosity and melting point of the selected grade allow safe handling from the Leather Chemicals manufacturing line.

A first order of leather dye fixers is easier when the purchase specification lists identity tests, not only a local trade name. Hydroxyl value, saponification value, acid value, cloud point, pH, water, colour and appearance are the numbers the Kandla QA laboratory can lock. If your QC uses a different solvent or a different cloud-point electrolyte for leather dye fixers, write that method on the order so the COA speaks the same language.

Custom lots of leather dye fixers are quoted after the hydrophobe or acid/alcohol pair, the target analytical window, the annual volume and the pack. Pilot batches are available when a catalogue point in the Leather Chemicals range is close but not exact. Once a trial lot is approved, that TDS should be frozen so the tenth delivery of leather dye fixers matches the first approved drum.

Storage of leather dye fixers should follow the SDS: keep containers closed, protect hygroscopic grades from moisture, and warm high-melt or high-mole grades until uniform before sampling. FIFO rotation protects colour and odour. If a drum of leather dye fixers has frozen or separated in transit, homogenise it before charging a batch; do not decant only the liquid layer.

Application advice for leather dye fixers is given against the process you describe, not as a universal recipe. Share machine type, temperature, pH, electrolytes, fibre or hide type, and any ban on APEO, formaldehyde or food-contact lists. Dyna Glycols can then sample leather dye fixers alone or as a pair with a sister grade from the same Leather Chemicals family so compatibility is checked in one evaluation.

Use the sample form and name Dyes Fixers together with the intended process, substrate and any EO/PO, HLB, cloud-point or active-content window. Laboratory quantities ship after a short company check, with SDS and TDS when those boxes are ticked. A catalogue grade can be confirmed, or a custom batch planned on the Kandla plants.

Yes. SDS, TDS and COA for Dyes Fixers are issued to identified companies after a short verification — they are not open downloads. COA is lot-specific; if a commercial lot has not been allocated, typical TDS data is sent first and the COA follows the production batch. Request files from the documents form.

Dyna Glycols custom-manufactures when a catalogue point in Leather Chemicals is close but not exact. Write the hydrophobe or acid/alcohol pair, the analytical window, pack and annual volume. Once a trial lot of Dyes Fixers is approved, freeze the TDS so later drums match the evaluation.
