EO/PO block copolymers are non-ionic surfactants built by adding ethylene oxide and propylene oxide in a defined sequence to a starter (often propylene glycol, ethylene glycol or an amine). Performance is set by total molecular weight, EO percentage and whether the blocks are normal or reverse. Dyna Glycols manufactures catalogue equivalents of common L, P and F types plus fatty-alcohol and oil EO/PO copolymers.
What EO/PO block copolymers are
EO/PO block copolymers are non-ionic surfactants built by adding ethylene oxide and propylene oxide in a defined sequence to a starter (often propylene glycol, ethylene glycol or an amine). Performance is set by total molecular weight, EO percentage and whether the blocks are normal or reverse. Dyna Glycols manufactures catalogue equivalents of common L, P and F types plus fatty-alcohol and oil EO/PO copolymers.
These grades are chosen for low foam, defoaming-adjacent knockdown, rinse aids, emulsion polymerisation and oilfield intermediates. They are not the same as a straight alcohol ethoxylate of similar HLB. Block order matters more than a small shift in total moles.
How Dyna Glycols manufactures EO/PO block copolymers
Alkoxylation is run to the target MW and EO percentage, then released against cloud point, hydroxyl value, pH, colour and water. Reverse-block types (PO-end) foam less than normal-block types of similar MW. State which architecture the formula needs.
Fatty-alcohol EO/PO copolymers (tridecyl, lauryl, decyl, oleyl, stearyl) and random butanol EO/PO grades sit alongside the polyglycol L/P/F equivalents. Custom sequences are quoted after the starter, block order and annual volume.
Typical grades in this range
Identify the starter, MW or an L/P/F equivalent, and EO percentage. Intermediate points are manufactured on request.
- Fatty alcohol EO/PO: tridecyl, lauryl, decyl, oleyl-cetyl, oleyl, stearyl
- Glycerol polyol ~4800 MW; aminopolyol; bisphenol A-2 mole PO
- Random butanol EO/PO: about 1450, 1650 and 4000 MW
- Castor oil EO/PO and nonyl phenol EO/PO
- Polyglycol types (indicative): L-31, L-44, L-61, L-62, L-64, L-68, L-81, L-101; P-84, P-85, P-94; F-38, F-87, F-88, F-108, F-127; reverse 17R2, 17R4, 25R2, 25R4
Where EO/PO block copolymers are used
Machine-wash rinse aids, bottle washers, textile jets and high-pressure cleaners use reverse-block and mid-MW L types for low foam. Defoaming-adjacent knockdown in coatings, paper and fermentation uses selected L and reverse grades.
Oilfield demulsifier intermediates and emulsion polymerisation use defined EO percentage rather than a detergent cloud point. Personal-care and pharma solubilisation use higher-EO F types where a poloxamer-style grade is specified.
If the need is a simple alcohol ethoxylate wetter, use the ethoxylates page. If the need is PO on a fatty alcohol without a block architecture, use propoxylates.
How to specify EO/PO block copolymers
Send starter, normal vs reverse block, target MW, EO percentage, cloud point method and foam test. State whether APEO (nonyl phenol EO/PO) is allowed. For an L-64 or F-127 equivalent, attach MW, %EO and hydroxyl from the existing TDS.
Pack, pour point and drum heating should be agreed for paste and solid F types.
Quality, documents and supply
Lots are released against hydroxyl value, cloud point, pH, water, colour and appearance. SDS and COA follow verification. Foam and cloud point must be checked in the customer electrolyte; water-only cloud point is not always the process number.
Warm high-MW grades until uniform. Keep containers closed. Follow the SDS.
Practical notes on EO/PO block copolymers
L, P and F labels are industry shorthand for liquid, paste and flake at a given MW/%EO. They are not a specification by themselves. Lock MW and EO percentage on the order.
Reverse-block 17R4 / 25R4 types wet with very low foam. They are not drop-in copies of L-64. Run a paired foam test.
Nonyl phenol EO/PO remains a catalogue item for industrial closed-loop use. Several markets restrict APEO. Say so on the enquiry.

Hydroxyl value tracks average chain length. Freeze it once a trial lot is approved so the tenth drum matches the first.
English is the source language for block-order and %EO claims.
Ordering and evaluating EO/PO block copolymers
Dyna Glycols supports EO/PO block copolymers with laboratory samples, current SDS, TDS and COA from the Kandla SEZ manufacturing network. Tell us the intended application, the substrate, the required moles or molecular weight, and any limits on colour, odour, cloud point, hydroxyl value, pH or residual feedstock. A matching catalogue grade of EO/PO block copolymers in the EO/PO Block Co-Polymers family can then be confirmed, or a custom batch can be planned on the ethoxylation, esterification or related plant.
When you evaluate EO/PO block copolymers, send the competitor grade if one exists, the bath or emulsion conditions, and the tests your receiving laboratory will run. Pack options for EO/PO block copolymers typically include drums, IBCs and bulk where the viscosity and melting point of the selected grade allow safe handling from the EO/PO Block Co-Polymers manufacturing line.
A first order of EO/PO block copolymers is easier when the purchase specification lists identity tests, not only a local trade name. Hydroxyl value, saponification value, acid value, cloud point, pH, water, colour and appearance are the numbers the Kandla QA laboratory can lock. If your QC uses a different solvent or a different cloud-point electrolyte for EO/PO block copolymers, write that method on the order so the COA speaks the same language.
Custom lots of EO/PO block copolymers are quoted after the hydrophobe or acid/alcohol pair, the target analytical window, the annual volume and the pack. Pilot batches are available when a catalogue point in the EO/PO Block Co-Polymers range is close but not exact. Once a trial lot is approved, that TDS should be frozen so the tenth delivery of EO/PO block copolymers matches the first approved drum.
Storage of EO/PO block copolymers should follow the SDS: keep containers closed, protect hygroscopic grades from moisture, and warm high-melt or high-mole grades until uniform before sampling. FIFO rotation protects colour and odour. If a drum of EO/PO block copolymers has frozen or separated in transit, homogenise it before charging a batch; do not decant only the liquid layer.
Application advice for EO/PO block copolymers is given against the process you describe, not as a universal recipe. Share machine type, temperature, pH, electrolytes, fibre or hide type, and any ban on APEO, formaldehyde or food-contact lists. Dyna Glycols can then sample EO/PO block copolymers alone or as a pair with a sister grade from the same EO/PO Block Co-Polymers family so compatibility is checked in one evaluation.
