Surface Active Agent

Surface active agents (surfactants) lower interfacial tension between oil and water or between a liquid and a solid. In the Dyna Glycols chemistry catalogue this heading collects the ethoxylate-based nonionics that customers specify when they need wetting, emulsifying, dispersing, foaming or defoaming behaviour rather than a named hydrophobe.

What surface active agents are

Surface active agents (surfactants) lower interfacial tension between oil and water or between a liquid and a solid. In the Dyna Glycols chemistry catalogue this heading collects the ethoxylate-based nonionics that customers specify when they need wetting, emulsifying, dispersing, foaming or defoaming behaviour rather than a named hydrophobe. The practical choice is still a fatty alcohol, alkyl phenol, fatty acid, fatty amine or oil ethoxylate, or an ester such as a polysorbate.

A surface active agent has a water-loving part and an oil-loving part. On ethoxylates the hydrophilic part is the polyoxyethylene chain and the hydrophobic part is the alcohol, phenol, acid, amine or oil. Changing moles moves the molecule from oil-soluble wetter to water-soluble emulsifier or dispersant. This page explains that map so a buyer can land on the right subcategory.

How Dyna Glycols manufactures surface active agents

Dyna Glycols manufactures surface active ethoxylates by adding ethylene oxide to the chosen hydrophobe, with optional esterification for PEG esters, sorbitan esters and polyglycerol esters. Reactors, distillation and QA are the same as for the named family pages.

When an enquiry only says “surface active agent” or “surfactant for cleaning”, the laboratory asks for the soil, temperature, pH and APEO status, then proposes a named grade. Custom moles are made when a catalogue point is close but not exact.

Typical grades in this range

Use this list to choose a family; then open that family’s page for moles.

  • Wetting — low-to-mid mole fatty alcohol or alkyl phenol ethoxylates
  • Emulsifying — mid-mole alcohol, NP, oil or fatty acid ethoxylates; sorbitan/polysorbate pairs
  • Dispersing — high-mole ethoxylates and high-mole PEG esters
  • Solubilising — polysorbates, castor oil ethoxylates, high-HLB PEG esters
  • Weakly cationic assist — fatty amine ethoxylates

Where surface active agents are used

Detergents, I&I hygiene, textile scouring and leather degreasing are wetting and emulsifying duties. Paints, inks and agro formulations need pigment wetting and oil emulsification. Personal care needs emulsifiers and solubilisers with controlled odour and colour.

Industrial process chemicals use surface active agents in metal cleaning, emulsion polymerisation, oilfield and paper. The same plant can supply the surfactant and, where relevant, the PEG or ester co-ingredient.

Regulatory lists (APEO, ecolabel, food-contact) often decide the family before HLB does. State those constraints on the first enquiry.

How to specify surface active agents

Describe the interface: oil type, soil, fibre, pigment or metal; the continuous phase; temperature; pH; foam wanted or not; and any banned chemistries. A competitor trade name plus TDS tests is the fastest match path.

For a new formula, HLB of the oil phase plus cloud point of the bath is enough to shortlist two or three ethoxylate moles.

Quality, documents and supply

Each surface active grade is released on its own TDS, not on a generic “surfactant” certificate. SDS and COA name the hydrophobe and the moles or ester identity. Samples are for application tests: Draves wetting, emulsion stability, foam or dispersion.

Pack and storage follow the named grade. Warm pastes, keep moisture out, and follow the SDS.

Practical notes on surface active agents

Anionic, cationic and amphoteric surfactants exist outside this ethoxylate catalogue. If the brief needs a sulphate, a quat or a betaine, say so; Dyna Glycols may still ethoxylate an intermediate for that chemistry.

Foam is not a measure of cleaning. Many efficient nonionic surface active agents are moderate foamers. Specify foam height if the process cannot tolerate foam.

Hard water tolerance is a reason to choose nonionic ethoxylates over some soaps and anionics. They remain active in electrolytes that would precipitate a fatty-acid soap.

Biodegradability and aquatic toxicity depend on the hydrophobe and the moles. Alcohol ethoxylates are often preferred where alkyl phenol ethoxylates are restricted. Dyna Glycols supplies both and will label the hydrophobe clearly.

A surface active agent that works in a bottle test may fail in a jet, a mill or a high-shear homogeniser. Share the process equipment so the grade can be chosen for that shear and residence time.

Start with the most specific family page if you already know the hydrophobe. Use this surface-active-agent page only as the routing guide when the chemistry is still open.

Ordering and evaluating surface active agents

Dyna Glycols supports surface active agents with laboratory samples, current SDS, TDS and COA from the Kandla SEZ manufacturing network. Tell us the intended application, the substrate, the required moles or molecular weight, and any limits on colour, odour, cloud point, hydroxyl value, pH or residual feedstock. A matching catalogue grade of surface active agents in the Ethoxylates family can then be confirmed, or a custom batch can be planned on the ethoxylation, esterification or related plant.

When you evaluate surface active agents, send the competitor grade if one exists, the bath or emulsion conditions, and the tests your receiving laboratory will run. Pack options for surface active agents typically include drums, IBCs and bulk where the viscosity and melting point of the selected grade allow safe handling from the Ethoxylates manufacturing line.

A first order of surface active agents is easier when the purchase specification lists identity tests, not only a local trade name. Hydroxyl value, saponification value, acid value, cloud point, pH, water, colour and appearance are the numbers the Kandla QA laboratory can lock. If your QC uses a different solvent or a different cloud-point electrolyte for surface active agents, write that method on the order so the COA speaks the same language.

Custom lots of surface active agents are quoted after the hydrophobe or acid/alcohol pair, the target analytical window, the annual volume and the pack. Pilot batches are available when a catalogue point in the Ethoxylates range is close but not exact. Once a trial lot is approved, that TDS should be frozen so the tenth delivery of surface active agents matches the first approved drum.

Storage of surface active agents should follow the SDS: keep containers closed, protect hygroscopic grades from moisture, and warm high-melt or high-mole grades until uniform before sampling. FIFO rotation protects colour and odour. If a drum of surface active agents has frozen or separated in transit, homogenise it before charging a batch; do not decant only the liquid layer.

Application advice for surface active agents is given against the process you describe, not as a universal recipe. Share machine type, temperature, pH, electrolytes, fibre or hide type, and any ban on APEO, formaldehyde or food-contact lists. Dyna Glycols can then sample surface active agents alone or as a pair with a sister grade from the same Ethoxylates family so compatibility is checked in one evaluation.

Use the sample form and name Surface Active Agent together with the intended process, substrate and any EO/PO, HLB, cloud-point or active-content window. Laboratory quantities ship after a short company check, with SDS and TDS when those boxes are ticked. A catalogue grade can be confirmed, or a custom batch planned on the Kandla plants.

Yes. SDS, TDS and COA for Surface Active Agent are issued to identified companies after a short verification — they are not open downloads. COA is lot-specific; if a commercial lot has not been allocated, typical TDS data is sent first and the COA follows the production batch. Request files from the documents form.

Dyna Glycols custom-manufactures when a catalogue point in Ethoxylates is close but not exact. Write the hydrophobe or acid/alcohol pair, the analytical window, pack and annual volume. Once a trial lot of Surface Active Agent is approved, freeze the TDS so later drums match the evaluation.
