Alkyl phenol ethoxylates are non-ionic surfactants made by adding ethylene oxide to an alkyl phenol hydrophobe, most often nonyl phenol, octyl phenol, dodecyl phenol, styrenated phenol or phenol itself. The aromatic ring plus the alkyl chain gives a compact oil-loving head, while the polyoxyethylene chain supplies water solubility that rises with EO moles.
What alkyl phenol ethoxylates are
Alkyl phenol ethoxylates are non-ionic surfactants made by adding ethylene oxide to an alkyl phenol hydrophobe, most often nonyl phenol, octyl phenol, dodecyl phenol, styrenated phenol or phenol itself. The aromatic ring plus the alkyl chain gives a compact oil-loving head, while the polyoxyethylene chain supplies water solubility that rises with EO moles. Dyna Glycols manufactures these grades for industrial wetting, emulsifying, dispersing and detergency where a defined cloud point, low colour and low odour are required.
Because the hydrophobe is aromatic, alkyl phenol ethoxylates give strong interfacial activity at relatively low use levels. Mid-mole grades such as NP-9 and NP-9.5 are widely used as workhorse emulsifiers and wetters. Lower moles remain more oil soluble and suit invert or concentrate systems. Higher moles, including NP-30, NP-40 and NP-100, are more hydrophilic and are used as dispersants, dye levelling aids or as intermediates for sulphation and phosphation. The same ethoxylation plant can also supply octyl, dodecyl and phenol ethoxylates when a different hydrophobe is specified.
How Dyna Glycols manufactures alkyl phenol ethoxylates
Production is carried out by controlled ethoxylation of the chosen alkyl phenol with ethylene oxide to an agreed molar ratio. Batches are set against cloud point in water or electrolyte, hydroxyl value, pH, colour and residual feedstock. Dedicated stainless-steel reactors with distillation, 24/7 QA and in-process GC support consistent mole distribution from laboratory through plant scale.
Customers may specify APEO-containing workhorse grades or ask for APEO-free alternatives based on fatty alcohol ethoxylates where regulations or brand policy require it. Dyna Glycols can run both families and will state clearly which hydrophobe is supplied so that formulations and labelling stay aligned.
Typical grades in this range
The following moles are typical catalogue points. Intermediate moles and custom cloud points are manufactured on request.
- Nonyl phenol: NP-4.5, NP-5, NP-6, NP-8, NP-9, NP-9.5, NP-10, NP-15, NP-20, NP-30, NP-40, NP-100 EO moles
- Octyl phenol: 5, 10, 25, 40, 60, 70 EO moles
- Dodecyl phenol: 5.9, 10, 20 EO moles
- Styrenated phenol: 20 EO moles
- Phenol: 4 and 6 EO moles
Where alkyl phenol ethoxylates are used
In detergents and hard-surface cleaners, NP-9 type grades wet oily soils and emulsify mineral or vegetable oils. In textiles they appear in scouring, wetting and dye-bath auxiliaries, including cheese dyeing where penetration matters. Emulsion polymerisation uses defined moles as non-ionic stabilisers, often alongside sulphated alkyl phenol ethoxylates.
Paints, coatings and agro-emulsifiable concentrates use alkyl phenol ethoxylates to wet pigments and to emulsify solvent or oil phases. Leather beam-house and degreasing baths historically used NP-9.5 equivalents; Dyna Glycols also offers APEO-free substitutes for tanneries that have moved away from alkyl phenols. Metal cleaning, oilfield and paper de-inking remain industrial outlets for selected moles.
High-mole grades act as dispersants and as feedstocks for phosphate esters and ether sulphates. When a customer already holds a specification written around NP-9, NP-10 or OP-10, matching cloud point and hydroxyl value is usually faster than rewriting the formula.
How to specify alkyl phenol ethoxylates
Send the hydrophobe (nonyl, octyl, dodecyl, styrenated phenol or phenol), target EO moles or cloud point, and any limit on colour, odour, pH and water. State the application so the laboratory can recommend a close catalogue point or a custom mole. If the end use is moving off APEO, say so in the enquiry and we will propose a fatty alcohol ethoxylate with a similar HLB band.
For emulsion polymerisation and agro EC/EW systems, also share the oil phase, required HLB and whether the grade will be sulphated or phosphated downstream. Pack, storage temperature and freeze–thaw behaviour should be agreed for high-mole pastes and solids.
Quality, documents and supply
Each batch of alkyl phenol ethoxylates is checked in the QA laboratory against the agreed certificate tests. SDS, TDS and COA are issued after a short verification of the company and the exact grade. Laboratory samples are available so wetting, emulsification and cloud point can be confirmed in the customer formula before a bulk order.
Supply is from Dyna Glycols manufacturing in India, with export packing and documentation for regular industrial shipments. Store liquid grades above their pour point; warm high-mole grades before use if they have set in the drum.
Practical notes on alkyl phenol ethoxylates
Cloud point is the practical control for many cleaning and textile baths. It rises with EO moles and falls when electrolyte or a more hydrophobic co-surfactant is added. Formulators often run just below or at the cloud point for best detergency in agitated systems. Dyna Glycols can report cloud point in water or in a named electrolyte if that is how the specification is written.
HLB of alkyl phenol ethoxylates increases with EO content. Low-mole NP grades sit in the oil-soluble wetting band; NP-9 to NP-15 cover oil-in-water emulsification; NP-30 and above behave as hydrophilic dispersants. Matching HLB to the oil phase remains the first screen when replacing a competitive grade.
Colour and odour matter in personal care and some coating uses. The Kandla plant targets low colour and low residual phenol odour. If a water-white grade is required, state APHA or Gardner limits on the purchase specification.
Regulatory and ecolabel programmes in several markets restrict nonyl phenol ethoxylates in wash-off and consumer products. Industrial closed-loop uses may still specify NP chemistry. Dyna Glycols will not substitute an APEO-free alcohol ethoxylate unless the customer asks for that change, so that existing homologation is not broken by accident.
Alkyl phenol ethoxylates can be further converted to anionic surfactants by sulphation or phosphation. If the intended step is ether sulphate or phosphate ester, tell the development team at the sample stage so residual moisture, catalyst traces and mole distribution can be kept inside the window that those processes need.
Typical handling is as a liquid, paste or waxy solid depending on moles. Use stainless or lined steel, avoid prolonged contact with copper alloys, and keep containers closed to limit moisture pick-up. SDS first-aid and spill advice should be followed for all EO-based non-ionics, including these alkyl phenol ethoxylates.
Ordering and evaluating alkyl phenol ethoxylates
Dyna Glycols supports alkyl phenol ethoxylates with laboratory samples, current SDS, TDS and COA from the Kandla SEZ manufacturing network. Tell us the intended application, the substrate, the required moles or molecular weight, and any limits on colour, odour, cloud point, hydroxyl value, pH or residual feedstock. A matching catalogue grade of alkyl phenol ethoxylates in the Ethoxylates family can then be confirmed, or a custom batch can be planned on the ethoxylation, esterification or related plant.
