What a surfactant actually is

A surfactant — a surface-active agent — has an oil-loving part and a water-loving part. It gathers at oil–water, air–water or solid–liquid interfaces and lowers tension so oils emulsify, surfaces wet, foam forms or solids disperse. In chemical development that sentence is not a purchase order. Dyna Glycols’ Surface Active Agent heading is a routing page: the grade you receive is still a named Ethoxylates hydrophobe, an ester, a sulphate or an amide. Writing only “surfactant for cleaning” forces the laboratory to guess the soil, the pH and whether foam is wanted.

The catalogue splits by how the hydrophilic part is built. Non-ionics are mostly ethoxylates and some esters. Anionics are sulphates, sulfonates, sulfosuccinates and phosphate esters. Amphoterics include coco betaine and cocamidopropyl betaine. Weakly cationic behaviour appears on fatty amine ethoxylates at low pH. Name the ionic class on the enquiry when you already know it; if you do not, describe the interface and the process instead of a warehouse nickname.

HLB is a screen, not the TDS

On ethoxylates the hydrophilic part is the polyoxyethylene chain and the hydrophobic part is the alcohol, phenol, acid, amine or oil. Adding ethylene oxide moles walks the molecule from oil-soluble wetter (low moles) through oil-in-water emulsifier (mid moles) to hydrophilic dispersant or solubiliser (high moles). HLB is a useful first screen for that walk. Two grades with a similar HLB can still differ in foam, odour, residual starter and electrolyte tolerance because the hydrophobe and the mole distribution differ.

Cloud point in the real bath matters more than cloud point in distilled water. Salt and alkali pull it down; the surfactant can haze or lose wetting in a cleaner even if the TDS looks fine. Share temperature, pH and electrolyte so the mole can sit in the intended phase. Foam is not a measure of cleaning. Many efficient non-ionic surface-active agents are moderate foamers — specify foam height if a jet or spray washer cannot tolerate it.

Families in the Dyna range

Nonionic-surfactants and the named ethoxylate pages cover wetting, emulsifying, dispersing and solubilising when the hydrophobe is known. Fatty alcohol ethoxylates are the APEO-free workhorse. Alkyl phenol ethoxylates remain industrial emulsifiers where they are still specified. Oil and fatty acid ethoxylates are ester-linked. Fatty amine ethoxylates add substantivity. PEG, polysorbates and polyglycerol esters cover solubilisers and PEG-free claims.

Sulphates and Sulfonates and sulfosuccinates supply foam, hardness-tolerant wash and flash wetting that non-ionics cannot. Amides boost foam and viscosity next to those anionics and can act as antistats. Hard water is a reason to choose non-ionic ethoxylates over some soaps: they remain active in electrolytes that would precipitate a fatty-acid soap. Regulatory lists (APEO, ecolabel, food-contact) often decide the family before HLB does — state those constraints first.

How to specify a surfactant

Describe the interface: oil type, soil, fibre, pigment or metal; the continuous phase (water, oil, or mixed); temperature; pH; foam wanted or not; and any banned chemistry. A competitor grade plus the identity tests your receiving laboratory runs is the fastest match. For a new formula, HLB of the oil phase plus cloud point of the bath is enough to shortlist two or three moles. Dyna Glycols releases each grade on its own TDS — not on a generic “surfactant” certificate — and will not swap an alkyl phenol into an alcohol ethoxylate order unless you ask.

Specification checklist

Put the application, the substrate, temperature, pH and any APEO or formaldehyde limit on the first enquiry. INCI or chemical names, cloud point, hydroxyl value, saponification value and colour are the numbers Dyna Glycols can lock on a TDS for this Surfactants topic. A warehouse nickname is not a specification.

Samples and documents

Request a laboratory sample of the related Surfactants grade together with the current SDS and TDS. The certificate of analysis is issued for the shipping lot after manufacture at Kandla SEZ. Once the trial is approved, freeze the identity tests so later drums of this chemistry match the article you evaluated.
