Umbrella words need a duty underneath
“Process aid” and “functional additive” describe a role in a plant recipe, not a single chemistry family. An enquiry that only says “process aid for our plant” cannot be sampled until the duty and the substrate are named.

How formulators use functional additives

Toll and custom mole routes exist when a catalogue point is close but not exact. Those are still defined molecules with frozen TDS tests, not black-box blends.

Textile Chemicals process aids include wetters, sequesters, soapers, levellers and softeners — each a separate specification. How to brief a process aid
Replace the umbrella word with one duty (wet, emulsify, defoam, sequester, inhibit corrosion, thicken, preserve), then add substrate, temperature, pH and regulatory limits. If two duties are required, say so — dual-function grades exist, but dual-function nicknames do not. Request the laboratory sample with SDS and TDS; freeze identity tests after approval.
Specification checklist
Put the application, the substrate, temperature, pH and any APEO or formaldehyde limit on the first enquiry.
