Fatty Acid Ethoxylates

Fatty acid ethoxylates are non-ionic surfactants produced by reacting ethylene oxide with a fatty acid hydrophobe such as oleic, stearic, lauric, palmitic, myristic or coconut fatty acid. The ester-linked ethoxylate combines a renewable or mixed-cut lipid tail with a polyethylene oxide head.

What fatty acid ethoxylates are

Fatty acid ethoxylates are non-ionic surfactants produced by reacting ethylene oxide with a fatty acid hydrophobe such as oleic, stearic, lauric, palmitic, myristic or coconut fatty acid. The ester-linked ethoxylate combines a renewable or mixed-cut lipid tail with a polyethylene oxide head. Dyna Glycols manufactures these grades to agreed EO moles, saponification value, hydroxyl value, acid value and pH.

Compared with fatty alcohol ethoxylates, fatty acid ethoxylates are ester-based, so they offer different hydrolytic behaviour and often a milder skin feel in personal care. They emulsify oils, solubilise fragrances and act as dispersing or viscosity-modifying auxiliaries. Low moles remain more lipophilic; higher moles on stearic or coconut cuts become water-dispersible or water-soluble emulsifiers.

How Dyna Glycols manufactures fatty acid ethoxylates

Ethoxylation is run on the named fatty acid at a defined molar ratio of ethylene oxide. In-process control covers conversion, residual acid, colour and the saponification or hydroxyl target written on the customer specification. Stainless-steel reactors, distillation and 24/7 QA sit alongside the same alkoxylation capability used for alcohols and oils.

Coconut fatty acid ethoxylates, oleic acid ethoxylates and stearic acid ethoxylates are the most requested catalogue families. Mixed C12–C18 cuts and custom moles are available when a formula is built around a specific SAP value or melt profile rather than a single named acid.

Typical grades in this range

Catalogue moles below are starting points. Other moles on lauric, palmitic and myristic acids are made to order.

  • Oleic acid: 2.5, 6, 10, 15 EO moles
  • Stearic acid: 8, 10.5, 40, 70 EO moles
  • Coconut fatty acid: 10, 12 EO moles
  • Lauric / palmitic / myristic acid ethoxylates: custom X EO moles

Where fatty acid ethoxylates are used

Personal care uses fatty acid ethoxylates as emulsifiers and solubilisers in creams, lotions and cleansing systems, especially where a fatty-acid feedstock is already part of the lipid phase. Stearic acid high-mole grades can thicken or opacify. Oleic grades suit lighter emulsions and oil solubilisation.

Textile auxiliaries, leather fatliquor intermediates and agro emulsifiable concentrates use selected moles as non-ionic emulsifiers. In metal working and industrial cleaners they lift fatty soils. Paints and inks may use them as pigment wetting aids when the binder system is compatible with ester ethoxylates.

Because the link is an ester, pH and storage temperature should be considered in alkaline detergents or long-hold concentrates. Where hydrolysis is a risk, fatty alcohol ethoxylates in the same HLB band may be the better sister chemistry. Dyna Glycols can advise which family fits the bath conditions.

How to specify fatty acid ethoxylates

Name the fatty acid or carbon cut, the EO moles or a target SAP / hydroxyl value, and the physical form required at the use temperature. Share acid value, colour and odour limits if the grade will go into personal care or a pale coating.

If the ethoxylate will be used as an emulsifier, include the oil phase, required HLB and whether the system is oil-in-water or water-in-oil. Custom moles on coconut, oleic or stearic acid are routine when a catalogue point is close but not exact.

Quality, documents and supply

Finished fatty acid ethoxylates are released against the agreed tests: appearance, acid value, saponification or hydroxyl value, pH, colour and water as specified. SDS, TDS and COA follow company verification. Samples allow emulsification and stability checks before bulk manufacture.

Dyna Glycols ships from Indian plants with export documentation. Protect drums from moisture and from temperatures that split the ester over long storage. Warm and mix set grades until uniform before sampling or charging.

Practical notes on fatty acid ethoxylates

Oleic acid ethoxylates stay more liquid at ambient conditions than high-mole stearic grades, which may be pastes or waxes. Plant handling, tracing and drum heating should match the melt curve of the selected mole.

Saponification value is a useful identity test for fatty acid ethoxylates because the ester remains in the molecule. Hydroxyl value tracks the polyoxyethylene chain. Both should appear on the TDS when the customer specification uses them.

Coconut fatty acid ethoxylates bring a mixed C8–C18 distribution that can improve emulsification of mixed triglyceride oils compared with a pure C18 cut. They are often specified in personal care and agro systems that already use coconut-based esters.

Low-mole oleic ethoxylates (around 2.5 EO) behave as wetting or coupling agents in oil-rich blends. Ten to fifteen moles move the product into the hydrophilic emulsifier band. State which band the formula needs rather than only a competitor trade name.

Residual free fatty acid should be controlled when the grade is used in systems sensitive to acidity or to soap formation with alkali. Ask for a maximum acid value if that is critical.

Fatty acid ethoxylates combine well with sorbitan esters, glyceryl esters and alcohol ethoxylates in mixed emulsifier blends. Dyna Glycols can sample more than one family so the HLB and freeze–thaw behaviour can be tuned in the same evaluation.

Ordering and evaluating fatty acid ethoxylates

Dyna Glycols supports fatty acid ethoxylates with laboratory samples, current SDS, TDS and COA from the Kandla SEZ manufacturing network. Tell us the intended application, the substrate, the required moles or molecular weight, and any limits on colour, odour, cloud point, hydroxyl value, pH or residual feedstock. A matching catalogue grade of fatty acid ethoxylates in the Ethoxylates family can then be confirmed, or a custom batch can be planned on the ethoxylation, esterification or related plant.

When you evaluate fatty acid ethoxylates, send the competitor grade if one exists, the bath or emulsion conditions, and the tests your receiving laboratory will run. Pack options for fatty acid ethoxylates typically include drums, IBCs and bulk where the viscosity and melting point of the selected grade allow safe handling from the Ethoxylates manufacturing line.

A first order of fatty acid ethoxylates is easier when the purchase specification lists identity tests, not only a local trade name. Hydroxyl value, saponification value, acid value, cloud point, pH, water, colour and appearance are the numbers the Kandla QA laboratory can lock. If your QC uses a different solvent or a different cloud-point electrolyte for fatty acid ethoxylates, write that method on the order so the COA speaks the same language.

Custom lots of fatty acid ethoxylates are quoted after the hydrophobe or acid/alcohol pair, the target analytical window, the annual volume and the pack. Pilot batches are available when a catalogue point in the Ethoxylates range is close but not exact. Once a trial lot is approved, that TDS should be frozen so the tenth delivery of fatty acid ethoxylates matches the first approved drum.

Laboratory quantities ship after a short company check, with SDS and TDS when those boxes are ticked. A catalogue grade can be confirmed, or a custom batch planned on the Kandla plants.

Yes. SDS, TDS and COA for Fatty Acid Ethoxylates are issued to identified companies after a short verification — they are not open downloads. COA is lot-specific; if a commercial lot has not been allocated, typical TDS data is sent first and the COA follows the production batch. Request files from the documents form.

Dyna Glycols custom-manufactures when a catalogue point in Ethoxylates is close but not exact. Write the hydrophobe or acid/alcohol pair, the analytical window, pack and annual volume. Once a trial lot of Fatty Acid Ethoxylates is approved, freeze the TDS so later drums match the evaluation.
