Build the emulsifier around the oil, not the other way round
An emulsifying agent sits at the oil–water interface and keeps droplets from coalescing. In chemical development the first input is the oil or solvent to be emulsified, the continuous phase (oil-in-water or water-in-oil), processing temperature and freeze–thaw expectation. HLB is a useful screen. It is not a specification on its own: two grades with a similar HLB can still differ in odour, residual feedstock, electrolyte tolerance and whether the link is an ether or an ester.
Dyna Glycols manufactures the non-ionic and ester emulsifiers used across detergents, personal care, agro EC/EW, leather fatliquors and industrial oils. Ethoxylates on fatty alcohols, acids, amines and oils cover most oil-in-water work. Lipophilic Sorbitan Esters paired with the matching Polysorbates of the same fatty acid remain the classic mixed-emulsifier pair. Glyceryl Esters structure creams as co-emulsifiers. Name the acid–alcohol pair rather than a generic request for “an emulsifier”.
Ethoxylate emulsifiers
Mid-mole fatty alcohol ethoxylates (about 6–12 EO on lauryl or tridecyl, 20–30 EO on ceto-stearyl) are the volume oil-in-water emulsifiers. Low moles stay in oil-rich concentrates. High moles behave as hydrophilic dispersants. Oil Ethoxylates such as castor 32–40 mole types solubilise fragrance and some actives; coconut, soya and tall oil ethoxylates emulsify agro and industrial oils. Do not assume a soya ethoxylate of the same moles will match a castor solubiliser: ricinoleic chemistry is part of the performance.
Fatty acid ethoxylates are ester-linked. They can feel milder in personal care, but strong alkali and long storage can hydrolyse them. If the bath is highly alkaline, an alcohol ethoxylate in the same HLB band is usually more stable. Fatty amine ethoxylates add weakly cationic substantivity for agro leaf wetting, asphalt and textile levelling — they are not a substitute for an alcohol emulsifier unless that adhesion is required.
Ester pairs and PEG-free routes
Polysorbate 20, 40, 60 and 80 types follow the fatty acid: laurate, palmitate, stearate and oleate. Ordering the matching sorbitan ester from the same plant keeps the acid cut aligned. These INCI names are the specification. If the brand needs a PEG-free claim, polyglycerol esters walk HLB by changing polyglycerol degree and the acid cut. They are not drop-in copies of a polysorbate 80 type; plan a full emulsion trial.
Agro Chemicals emulsifiable concentrates fail on bloom, freeze–thaw and hard-water break more often than on first-pass appearance. Matching the emulsifier feedstock to the solvent or vegetable oil in the concentrate is the practical starting point. Give the oil, required HLB, whether the system is EC or EW, and any ban on alkyl phenol ethoxylates.
How to brief an emulsifier sample
List the oil phase with percentages, required HLB or a current grade, processing temperature, electrolyte, pH and whether the emulsion must invert. For creams, say if the ester is a primary emulsifier or a co-emulsifier next to glyceryl stearate. For agro, attach the solvent map. Dyna Glycols can sample more than one family so HLB and freeze–thaw can be tuned in the same evaluation.
Specification checklist
Put the application, the substrate, temperature, pH and any APEO or formaldehyde limit on the first enquiry. INCI or chemical names, cloud point, hydroxyl value, saponification value and colour are the numbers Dyna Glycols can lock on a TDS for this Emulsifying agents topic. A warehouse nickname is not a specification.
Samples and documents
Request a laboratory sample of the related Emulsifying agents grade together with the current SDS and TDS. The certificate of analysis is issued for the shipping lot after manufacture at Kandla SEZ. Once the trial is approved, freeze the identity tests so later drums of this chemistry match the article you evaluated.
