Oil ethoxylates are non-ionic surfactants made by adding ethylene oxide to a triglyceride or other oil, such as castor oil, hydrogenated castor oil, coconut oil, soya oil, rapeseed oil or tall oil. The product is a mixture of ethoxylated glycerides and related species that emulsify oils, solubilise actives and give a lubricating or emollient character.
What oil ethoxylates are
Oil ethoxylates are non-ionic surfactants made by adding ethylene oxide to a triglyceride or other oil, such as castor oil, hydrogenated castor oil, coconut oil, soya oil, rapeseed oil or tall oil. The product is a mixture of ethoxylated glycerides and related species that emulsify oils, solubilise actives and give a lubricating or emollient character. Dyna Glycols manufactures these grades to agreed EO moles, saponification value, hydroxyl value, acid value and pH.
Castor oil ethoxylates (often 20–40 EO, with 32–36 EO as a common pharmaceutical and fragrance solubiliser band) are the best-known members. Hydrogenated castor oil ethoxylates give paler, more oxidatively stable solubilisers. Coconut and soya oil ethoxylates are used in agro, textile and industrial emulsifiable oils. Tall oil ethoxylates appear in flotation, agro and industrial emulsifiers.
How Dyna Glycols manufactures oil ethoxylates
The named oil is ethoxylated in stainless-steel reactors to the target molar ratio. Control covers conversion, SAP, hydroxyl, acid value, colour and water. The same alkoxylation site that runs alcohols and acids is used, so custom moles on castor, coconut or soya are practical.
Feedstock origin (castor, coconut, soya, rapeseed, tall oil) and whether the castor is hydrogenated should be stated on the order. Those choices change iodine value, odour and the solubilising power of the finished oil ethoxylate.
Typical grades in this range
Catalogue moles below are typical. Other oils and moles are manufactured on request.
- Castor oil: 2.5, 5, 8, 20, 32, 36, 40 EO moles
- Hydrogenated castor oil: 7.5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 200 EO moles
- Coconut oil: 6, 40, 80, 150 EO moles
- Soya oil: 10, 25 EO moles
- Rapeseed oil: 10 EO moles
- Tall oil: 10, 20, 25 EO moles
Where oil ethoxylates are used
Personal care and pharmaceutical-adjacent solubilisers use castor and hydrogenated castor oil ethoxylates to bring fragrance, essential oils and some APIs into water. They are also emulsifiers in creams and bath oils.
Agro EC and EW systems use coconut, soya, rapeseed and tall oil ethoxylates to emulsify pesticide oils. Textile fibre finishes and leather fatliquor intermediates use selected moles as lubricants and emulsifiers. Metal-working and industrial cleaners use them where a triglyceride-based surfactant is preferred.
High-mole coconut oil ethoxylates (80–150 EO) are hydrophilic dispersants and solubilisers. Low-mole castor grades remain oil-soluble wetting and coupling agents. Matching the oil feedstock to the oil being emulsified often improves freeze–thaw and bloom behaviour.
How to specify oil ethoxylates
Name the oil, whether it is hydrogenated, the EO moles or a target SAP/hydroxyl value, and colour or odour limits. For solubiliser duty, share the oil or fragrance to be solubilised and the required clarity temperature.
If the grade must meet a pharmacopoeia-style identity (for example a hydrogenated castor oil 40 EO type), attach that monograph so the laboratory can match the tests that matter, not only the mole number.
Quality, documents and supply
Oil ethoxylates are released against appearance, SAP, hydroxyl, acid value, pH, colour and water as specified. SDS, TDS and COA follow company verification. Samples support solubilisation and emulsion stability tests.
Store in closed containers, protect from moisture, and warm high-mole grades until clear and uniform. Follow the SDS for handling ethoxylated oils.
Practical notes on oil ethoxylates
Castor oil contains ricinoleic acid, so its ethoxylates have a secondary hydroxyl that other triglyceride ethoxylates lack. That chemistry is part of why CO-35 / CO-40 types solubilise so efficiently. Do not assume a soya oil ethoxylate of the same moles will match a castor solubiliser.
Hydrogenated castor oil ethoxylates reduce unsaturation, which improves colour hold and odour. They are preferred in pale personal-care and many fragrance applications.
Tall oil ethoxylates carry residual rosin character and are chosen for industrial emulsification and flotation rather than for personal care. State if odour-sensitive uses are planned so a vegetable oil ethoxylate can be offered instead.
Acid value should stay low if the oil ethoxylate will be used in systems that form soaps with alkali. Ask for a maximum acid value on pale or pharma-adjacent grades.
Viscosity of high-mole oil ethoxylates can be high at ambient temperature. Drum heating and in-line strainers should be planned for 40–200 EO hydrogenated castor and coconut grades.
Dyna Glycols can run a paired trial of an oil ethoxylate and a fatty acid ethoxylate of similar HLB when the customer is unsure which ester-linked family will emulsify a given triglyceride better.
Ordering and evaluating oil ethoxylates
Send the application, the analytical window and the pack size when you request a laboratory sample of oil ethoxylates. SDS, TDS and COA follow a short company check. Handle and store the grade as the SDS describes.
