High pH decides the surfactant

Construction Chemicals serve cement grinding, concrete and gypsum. The usual constraints are high pH, high electrolyte, freeze–thaw and a foam limit in the mixer or the board line. Sulfosuccinate wetters and some ether sulphates should be checked for hydrolysis in that window. A mid-mole detergent ethoxylate that works in a bottle wash can foam a concrete mixer or hydrolyse in gypsum slurry.

Write the sector (cement mill, ready-mix, precast, gypsum board) and the duty (grinding aid, plasticiser, accelerator, defoamer, foaming agent, water reducer, surface finish) on the first enquiry.

Cement and concrete

Triethanolamine (85% and 98%) is listed as TEA salts for cement grinding aids: it reduces settling time and improves resistance to crumbling under freeze–thaw. It is a neutralizing amine, not a surfactant. Concrete uses alkyl phenol ethoxylates as mortar plasticisers where they are still specified — economical cost in use, a wide solubility range, freeze–thaw stability and strong wetting. Alcohol alkoxylates with low pour point are the usual APEO-free or low-temperature path.

Tetrahydroxyethyl ethylene diamine and diethanol isopropanol amine appear as concrete hardening accelerators. Alkoxylates, naphthalene sulfonates and formaldehyde condensates are used as defoamers and as superplasticiser building blocks. Methyl PEG glycols are intermediates for superplasticisers. Polyethylene-glycol grades act as lubricants and surface-finish additives. Alkyl ether sulphates are used as foaming agents in lightweight or foamed concrete — that is intentional foam, the opposite of a superplasticiser defoamer. Do not mix those two briefs.

Gypsum

Alcohol ethoxylates wet and emulsify in gypsum-board manufacture, with freeze–thaw stability as a stated requirement. Polycarboxylate ethers based on methyl polyethylene glycol esters are water reducers. Alcohol ethoxylates also appear as foaming-agent intermediates for gypsum. Acrylic or methacrylic esters of fatty alcohols and ethoxylates are further water-reducer routes. Name whether the board line needs wetting, water reduction or foam so a single ethoxylate is not asked to do all three.

How to specify

Name cement, concrete or gypsum, the duty, pH, temperature, foam limit, freeze–thaw need and APEO policy. For grinding aids, name TEA concentration. For plasticisers and water reducers, give slump or water-reduction target if you have one. Dyna Glycols will sample an alkyl phenol or alcohol ethoxylate, an EO/PO defoamer, an ether sulphate foamer, PEG or a TEA grade against that mix — not a textile wetter by default.

Specification checklist

Put the application, the substrate, temperature, pH and any APEO or formaldehyde limit on the first enquiry. INCI or chemical names, cloud point, hydroxyl value, saponification value and colour are the numbers Dyna Glycols can lock on a TDS for this Construction topic. A warehouse nickname is not a specification.

Samples and documents

Request a laboratory sample of the related Construction grade together with the current SDS and TDS. The certificate of analysis is issued for the shipping lot after manufacture at Kandla SEZ. Once the trial is approved, freeze the identity tests so later drums of this chemistry match the article you evaluated.
