Glycol Esters

Glycol esters are fatty-acid esters of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butylene glycol or similar short glycols — for example glycol stearates, propylene glycol esters and related opacifiers and emollients. They are used to pearlise wash products, to thicken or opacify creams, and as light ester emollients.

What glycol esters are

Glycol esters are fatty-acid esters of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butylene glycol or similar short glycols — for example glycol stearates, propylene glycol esters and related opacifiers and emollients. They are used to pearlise wash products, to thicken or opacify creams, and as light ester emollients. Dyna Glycols manufactures them to agreed acid value, SAP, melting range, hydroxyl value (for partial esters) and colour.

Ethylene glycol distearate and monostearate types are classic pearlising agents in shampoos and hand soaps. Propylene glycol esters can be more liquid and are used as emollients or as solvents for actives. The chemistry is esterification, not ethoxylation, though the products sit in formulae next to alcohol ethoxylates.

How Dyna Glycols manufactures glycol esters

The named glycol is esterified with the fatty acid to a mono/di ratio that delivers the required melt and pearl or emollient behaviour. Finishing drives acid value down and sets colour. QA follows the customer identity tests.

Customers should state mono versus di preference. Distearates pearl; some monoesters are more soluble and less pearlescent. That choice belongs on the purchase specification, not only on a trade name.

Typical grades in this range

Name the glycol, the fatty acid, and mono/di if known.

  • Ethylene glycol mono- and distearate pearlising esters
  • Propylene glycol fatty-acid esters
  • Other short-glycol esters on specified acids
  • Custom melt range, acid value and colour

Where glycol esters are used

Rinse-off personal care uses glycol distearates as pearling waxes, often with a surfactant system based on ether sulphates and alcohol ethoxylates. Creams use glycol esters as bodying agents.

Technical suspensions and some textile or leather auxiliaries use glycol esters as opacifiers or as ester solvents. Industrial cleaners may include them where a waxy ester is part of a structured liquid.

They are not primary detergents. Pair them with a surface-active ethoxylate if wetting is required.

How to specify glycol esters

State glycol type, fatty acid, mono/di, melting range, acid value and the intended pearl particle size or process (hot vs cold pearl). Share the surfactant base if the ester must crystallise in a shampoo.

For emollient propylene glycol esters, include viscosity and odour limits.

Quality, documents and supply

Lots are released against melt range, acid value, SAP, appearance and colour. SDS and COA follow verification. Samples support pearl or cream trials in the actual surfactant base.

Store dry. Melt and cool according to the pearlising process sheet; cooling rate affects crystal size and shine.

Practical notes on glycol esters

Pearl quality depends on the rest of the formula: electrolyte, pH, and the nonionic/anionic mix. A glycol ester that pearls in one shampoo may not in another. Always trial in the customer base.

Acid value should be low so the pearl system does not drift pH or irritate. Set a maximum on pale personal-care grades.

EGDS-type esters are waxy solids. Drum or bag handling, melt temperature and in-line filtration should be agreed for plant use.

Dyna Glycols also manufactures glyceryl esters and PEG esters. If the need is an O/W emulsifier rather than a pearling wax, those families are more suitable.

Propylene glycol esters can have a different regulatory and labelling profile from ethylene glycol esters. Name the glycol on the SDS enquiry.

For a first pearlising sample, ethylene glycol distearate type plus melting range is the usual request; include the wash-base chemistry so advice can be specific.

Ordering and evaluating glycol esters

Dyna Glycols supports glycol esters with laboratory samples, current SDS, TDS and COA from the Kandla SEZ manufacturing network. Tell us the intended application, the substrate, the required moles or molecular weight, and any limits on colour, odour, cloud point, hydroxyl value, pH or residual feedstock. A matching catalogue grade of glycol esters in the Esters family can then be confirmed, or a custom batch can be planned on the ethoxylation, esterification or related plant.

When you evaluate glycol esters, send the competitor grade if one exists, the bath or emulsion conditions, and the tests your receiving laboratory will run. Pack options for glycol esters typically include drums, IBCs and bulk where the viscosity and melting point of the selected grade allow safe handling from the Esters manufacturing line.

A first order of glycol esters is easier when the purchase specification lists identity tests, not only a local trade name. Hydroxyl value, saponification value, acid value, cloud point, pH, water, colour and appearance are the numbers the Kandla QA laboratory can lock. If your QC uses a different solvent or a different cloud-point electrolyte for glycol esters, write that method on the order so the COA speaks the same language.

Custom lots of glycol esters are quoted after the hydrophobe or acid/alcohol pair, the target analytical window, the annual volume and the pack. Pilot batches are available when a catalogue point in the Esters range is close but not exact. Once a trial lot is approved, that TDS should be frozen so the tenth delivery of glycol esters matches the first approved drum.

Storage of glycol esters should follow the SDS: keep containers closed, protect hygroscopic grades from moisture, and warm high-melt or high-mole grades until uniform before sampling. FIFO rotation protects colour and odour. If a drum of glycol esters has frozen or separated in transit, homogenise it before charging a batch; do not decant only the liquid layer.

Application advice for glycol esters is given against the process you describe, not as a universal recipe. Share machine type, temperature, pH, electrolytes, fibre or hide type, and any ban on APEO, formaldehyde or food-contact lists. Dyna Glycols can then sample glycol esters alone or as a pair with a sister grade from the same Esters family so compatibility is checked in one evaluation.

Documentation for glycol esters is issued after a short verification of the company and the exact grade name. SDS covers handling; TDS covers typical properties; COA covers the shipping lot. If a customer audit needs extra tests on glycol esters (for example residual feedstock, peroxide, formaldehyde or a pharmacopoeia-style identity), list those tests at the enquiry stage so they are built into release rather than added after dispatch.

Export packing and labelling of glycol esters follow the transport class on the SDS. Regular industrial shipments from the Indian manufacturing network can be scheduled once the grade is approved. For development quantities of glycol esters, laboratory samples are the correct first step; they let wetting, emulsification, retanning, finishing or textile handle be proven in your own equipment before a bulk campaign is booked on the Esters plant.

Use the sample form and name Glycol Esters together with the intended process, substrate and any EO/PO, HLB, cloud-point or active-content window. Laboratory quantities ship after a short company check, with SDS and TDS when those boxes are ticked. A catalogue grade can be confirmed, or a custom batch planned on the Kandla plants.

Yes. SDS, TDS and COA for Glycol Esters are issued to identified companies after a short verification — they are not open downloads. COA is lot-specific; if a commercial lot has not been allocated, typical TDS data is sent first and the COA follows the production batch. Request files from the documents form.

Dyna Glycols custom-manufactures when a catalogue point in Esters is close but not exact. Write the hydrophobe or acid/alcohol pair, the analytical window, pack and annual volume. Once a trial lot of Glycol Esters is approved, freeze the TDS so later drums match the evaluation.
