Esters are formed by condensation of a carboxylic acid and an alcohol. In personal care they are used as emollients, solubilisers, emulsifier co-actives and process intermediates. Dyna Glycols manufactures a range of glycol esters with fatty acids, methoxylated esters, glyceryl esters, PEG esters, sorbitan esters and alkyl benzoates to specification. The useful starting point is the job the ester must do — feel, solvency, pearl or emulsification — not a generic request for “an ester”.
What to specify
A useful brief includes the oil phase, required skin feel, processing temperature, and whether the ester is a primary emollient or a co-emulsifier. Acid value, hydroxyl value, colour and odour are the usual control points. “Cosmetic grade” on its own is not a specification. For sun care, say if the ester must dissolve organic UV filters; alkyl benzoate types are often chosen for that polarity and a dry after-feel.
Custom manufacture
When a catalogue ester is close but not exact, we can work from a target specification. Esterification capability sits alongside ethoxylation, sulfonation, phosphation and amidification, so a finished system can be built from more than one chemistry if the application needs it. PEG-free briefs should name glyceryl or polyglycerol esters rather than polysorbates or PEG esters.

Glyceryl stearate and related partial glycerides structure creams. Glycol distearates pearl wash products. PEG esters thicken oil-in-water systems. Fatty acid esters such as isopropyl or 2-ethylhexyl cuts are light emollients and lubricant fluids. Sorbitan esters sit on the oil side of an emulsion and are paired with the matching polysorbate of the same fatty acid. Name the acid–alcohol pair and the mono versus di ratio on the order.
Documents and evaluation
Request SDS, TDS and a laboratory sample together. Melt waxy esters uniformly before use; local overheating darkens glycerides and raises acid value. Keep containers dry, because hydrolysis slowly raises acid value in the presence of water and heat. Once a cream or wash base is approved, freeze acid value, saponification value and melting range on the TDS.
