Sorbitan Esters

Sorbitan esters are lipophilic nonionic emulsifiers made by esterifying sorbitol/sorbitan with fatty acids: sorbitan laurate, palmitate, stearate, oleate and tristearate types (often known as SPAN-type grades). They sit at the oil side of an emulsion and are almost always paired with a hydrophilic polysorbate of the same fatty acid.

What sorbitan esters are

Sorbitan esters are lipophilic nonionic emulsifiers made by esterifying sorbitol/sorbitan with fatty acids: sorbitan laurate, palmitate, stearate, oleate and tristearate types (often known as SPAN-type grades). They sit at the oil side of an emulsion and are almost always paired with a hydrophilic polysorbate of the same fatty acid. Dyna Glycols manufactures them to agreed SAP, hydroxyl value, acid value, melting behaviour and colour.

Sorbitan monooleate is a liquid W/O emulsifier and lubricant additive. Sorbitan monostearate is a waxy cream and food-adjacent emulsifier. Sorbitan tristearate is more lipophilic still. These esters contain no ethylene oxide until they are converted to polysorbates on the ethoxylation plant.

How Dyna Glycols manufactures sorbitan esters

Sorbitol is cyclised and esterified with the named fatty acid to a target mono/di/tri ratio. Finishing sets acid value, colour and melt. QA uses SAP and hydroxyl value as identity. The same site ethoxylates these esters to polysorbates so a matched pair can be supplied.

Oleate, stearate, palmitate and laurate are the standard acids. Custom mixed cuts and specific hydroxyl windows are available when a lubricant or food-adjacent specification is tight.

Typical grades in this range

Name the fatty acid and whether the grade is mono-, sesqui- or tri-ester.

  • Sorbitan monolaurate, monopalmitate, monostearate, monooleate
  • Sorbitan sesquioleate and trioleate / tristearate types
  • Matched pairs with polysorbate 20, 40, 60, 80
  • Custom SAP, hydroxyl and melting range

Where sorbitan esters are used

Personal care and pharmaceutical-adjacent creams use sorbitan stearate or oleate with the matching polysorbate to walk HLB across an oil phase. W/O sunscreens and balms use the more lipophilic sorbitan esters alone or with polyglycerol esters.

Food-adjacent emulsions, chocolate and bakery systems use selected sorbitan esters as crystal modifiers and emulsifiers where permitted. Industrial uses include lubricant additives, textile fibre finishes, agro EC systems and explosives or mining emulsions that specify SPAN-type chemistry.

Paints, inks and pigment wetting can use sorbitan oleate as a lipophilic dispersant. Leather and metal-working oil phases use them as co-emulsifiers.

How to specify sorbitan esters

State the fatty acid, mono vs tri, SAP and hydroxyl targets, melting range and colour. If a polysorbate partner is needed, order both so fatty-acid lots match.

For lubricant or food-adjacent duty, attach the extra tests (for example hydroxyl window, iodine value for oleates) from the existing specification.

Quality, documents and supply

Lots are released against SAP, hydroxyl, acid value, appearance, colour and melt where relevant. SDS and COA follow verification. Samples support W/O or O/W pair trials.

Store dry. Melt waxy stearates uniformly. Oleates should be protected from air that raises peroxide and colour.

Practical notes on sorbitan esters

HLB of sorbitan esters is low (typically about 1.8–8 depending on the grade). They are not O/W emulsifiers on their own except at high water-in-oil internal phase with process shear. Pair them with polysorbates for O/W creams.

Hydroxyl value tracks residual hydroxyls and therefore the mono vs tri character. It is as important as SAP on the COA.

Iodine value on oleate grades predicts drying and odour. Low-iodine or antioxidant-stabilised oleates should be requested if storage is long.

Dyna Glycols manufactures polysorbates on the ethoxylate side of the catalogue. A combined shipment of sorbitan oleate and polysorbate 80 is the usual development pack.

These esters can hydrolyse in strong alkali. Check process pH. They are generally more oil-soluble than glyceryl monostearate and give a different crystal network in creams.

For a first sample, name the SPAN-type (20/40/60/80 analogue) or the INCI, plus whether the trial is W/O or O/W with a polysorbate partner.

Ordering and evaluating sorbitan esters

Dyna Glycols supports sorbitan esters with laboratory samples, current SDS, TDS and COA from the Kandla SEZ manufacturing network. Tell us the intended application, the substrate, the required moles or molecular weight, and any limits on colour, odour, cloud point, hydroxyl value, pH or residual feedstock. A matching catalogue grade of sorbitan esters in the Esters family can then be confirmed, or a custom batch can be planned on the ethoxylation, esterification or related plant.

When you evaluate sorbitan esters, send the competitor grade if one exists, the bath or emulsion conditions, and the tests your receiving laboratory will run. Pack options for sorbitan esters typically include drums, IBCs and bulk where the viscosity and melting point of the selected grade allow safe handling from the Esters manufacturing line.

A first order of sorbitan esters is easier when the purchase specification lists identity tests, not only a local trade name. Hydroxyl value, saponification value, acid value, cloud point, pH, water, colour and appearance are the numbers the Kandla QA laboratory can lock. If your QC uses a different solvent or a different cloud-point electrolyte for sorbitan esters, write that method on the order so the COA speaks the same language.

Custom lots of sorbitan esters are quoted after the hydrophobe or acid/alcohol pair, the target analytical window, the annual volume and the pack. Pilot batches are available when a catalogue point in the Esters range is close but not exact. Once a trial lot is approved, that TDS should be frozen so the tenth delivery of sorbitan esters matches the first approved drum.

Storage of sorbitan esters should follow the SDS: keep containers closed, protect hygroscopic grades from moisture, and warm high-melt or high-mole grades until uniform before sampling. FIFO rotation protects colour and odour. If a drum of sorbitan esters has frozen or separated in transit, homogenise it before charging a batch; do not decant only the liquid layer.

Application advice for sorbitan esters is given against the process you describe, not as a universal recipe. Share machine type, temperature, pH, electrolytes, fibre or hide type, and any ban on APEO, formaldehyde or food-contact lists. Dyna Glycols can then sample sorbitan esters alone or as a pair with a sister grade from the same Esters family so compatibility is checked in one evaluation.

Documentation for sorbitan esters is issued after a short verification of the company and the exact grade name. SDS covers handling; TDS covers typical properties; COA covers the shipping lot. If a customer audit needs extra tests on sorbitan esters (for example residual feedstock, peroxide, formaldehyde or a pharmacopoeia-style identity), list those tests at the enquiry stage so they are built into release rather than added after dispatch.

Use the sample form and name Sorbitan Esters together with the intended process, substrate and any EO/PO, HLB, cloud-point or active-content window. Laboratory quantities ship after a short company check, with SDS and TDS when those boxes are ticked. A catalogue grade can be confirmed, or a custom batch planned on the Kandla plants.

Yes. SDS, TDS and COA for Sorbitan Esters are issued to identified companies after a short verification — they are not open downloads. COA is lot-specific; if a commercial lot has not been allocated, typical TDS data is sent first and the COA follows the production batch. Request files from the documents form.
