What alkyl benzoates are

Alkyl benzoates are esters of benzoic acid with fatty or synthetic alcohols, used as light emollients, solvent-esters and spreading agents rather than as ethoxylated surfactants. Typical members include C12–C15 alkyl benzoate and related benzoate esters specified in personal care, sun care and some technical solvent blends. Dyna Glycols manufactures alkyl benzoates to agreed acid value, saponification value, colour, odour and refractive or viscosity targets.

The aromatic ester structure gives a dry, non-oily skin feel, good solvency for organic UV filters and many oil-soluble actives, and compatibility with cosmetic oils and esters. In industrial formulae they can act as low-odour aromatic esters for coatings or process solvents where a benzoate ester is named.

Benzoic acid is esterified with the specified alcohol cut under conditions that drive acid value down and colour to the agreed Gardner or APHA. Distillation or finishing steps remove residual acid and low boilers. QA follows the ester identity tests on the customer TDS.

Alcohol cuts (for example C12–C15) should be named on the order because spreading, viscosity and polarity change with chain-length distribution. Custom pour points are available by adjusting the alcohol.

Where alkyl benzoates are used

Sun care and daily moisturisers use alkyl benzoates to dissolve crystalline UV filters and to give a light after-feel. Colour cosmetics use them as spreading esters in anhydrous systems.

Hair and skin oils, bath products and antiperspirant-adjacent anhydrous bases use alkyl benzoates where a heavier triglyceride would feel greasy. Technical solvent-ester uses include coatings and process aids that specify a benzoate ester.

They are not detergents. If the need is wetting or emulsifying, pair an alkyl benzoate oil phase with a separate ethoxylate or polyglyceryl emulsifier from the other families.

How to specify alkyl benzoates

Name the alcohol cut, maximum acid value, colour, odour and any refractive index or viscosity range from the existing specification. State if the grade is for sun-filter solvency so the laboratory can consider polarity.

Share freeze points if the ester must stay liquid in a winter warehouse or in a sprayable formula.

Quality, documents and supply

Each lot is released against acid value, SAP, colour, appearance and the extra identity tests on the TDS. SDS and COA follow company verification. Samples support solvency and skin-feel or coating tests.

Store in closed containers away from moisture that can raise acid value over long periods. Follow the SDS for aromatic ester handling.

Practical notes on alkyl benzoates

Acid value is the key purity test: residual benzoic acid affects odour and can irritate in leave-on care. Set a tight maximum for personal-care grades.

Polarity of alkyl benzoates sits between light hydrocarbons and heavier esters, which is why they dissolve many UV filters. Confirm solvency with the actual filter blend, not only with a single sunscreen molecule.

Odour must be low for facial products. Request an odour panel or a residual aromatics limit if the brand is sensitive.

Compatibility with packaging (PET, PE, pumps) should be checked; esters can stress-crack some plastics at high concentration.

Storage of alkyl benzoates should follow the SDS: keep containers closed, protect hygroscopic grades from moisture, and warm high-melt or high-mole grades until uniform before sampling. FIFO rotation protects colour and odour. If a drum of alkyl benzoates has frozen or separated in transit, homogenise it before charging a batch; do not decant only the liquid layer.
