Pearl is a crystal, not a thickener
A pearlising agent forms platelet crystals that give a wash product its silky sheen. An opacifier makes the same bottle look creamy without a strong pearl. In chemical development those jobs sit with Glycol Esters, especially ethylene glycol distearate and monostearate types, not with an amide thickener and not with a high-mole ethoxylate. Dyna Glycols manufactures glycol esters of ethylene and propylene glycol as pearlising waxes and light emollients in Personal Care Chemicals.
Pearl quality depends on the rest of the surfactant base, cooling rate and mixing. A grade that pearls in one SLES/betaine system can look dull in another. Always trial in the actual shampoo, hand wash or bath gel, not in water. Overheating the pearl slurry darkens the ester and raises acid value.
Glycol esters versus other whites
Ethylene glycol distearate types are the classic pearl in low-viscosity shampoos, baby toiletries, dishwashing liquids, liquid soaps and bath gels. Propylene glycol esters can be more liquid and are used as emollients or solvents for actives rather than as the main pearl. The chemistry is esterification, not ethoxylation, though the products sit in formulae next to alcohol ethoxylates and Amides.
Glyceryl stearate structures creams; it is not a wash pearl. Titanium dioxide or styrene-acrylate opacifiers are different technologies that Dyna Glycols does not treat as catalogue esters. If the brief is “make it white”, say whether you want pearl platelets, a cream opacity, or a structured lotion — those three samples are different families.
Process points that decide the look
Melt the wax uniformly into the surfactant paste at the temperature the mill already uses, then cool with agitation so crystals grow as platelets. Local overheating and fast crash-cooling give grit or a flat white. Mono versus di ester ratio and melting range belong on the TDS. A cold-process liquid pearl blend is not interchangeable with a flake distearate without a process check.
Residual acid value and colour matter in pale or baby products. Keep containers dry; hydrolysis slowly raises acid value in the presence of water and heat. Once the bottle appearance is approved, freeze melting range, acid value and the cooling programme notes with the specification.
How to specify
Send the surfactant skeleton, target appearance (pearl, cream-opaque, lotion), process temperature and any PEG-free constraint. Name ethylene glycol distearate or the INCI if the formula already uses it. Dyna Glycols will sample a glycol ester against that wash base rather than an amide or a glyceryl cream thickener.
Specification checklist
Put the application, the substrate, temperature, pH and any APEO or formaldehyde limit on the first enquiry. INCI or chemical names, cloud point, hydroxyl value, saponification value and colour are the numbers Dyna Glycols can lock on a TDS for this Pearlising agents topic. A warehouse nickname is not a specification.
Samples and documents
Request a laboratory sample of the related Pearlising agents grade together with the current SDS and TDS. The certificate of analysis is issued for the shipping lot after manufacture at Kandla SEZ. Once the trial is approved, freeze the identity tests so later drums of this chemistry match the article you evaluated.
