What the chemistry is
Alkyl Phenol Ethoxylates are made by adding ethylene oxide to an alkyl phenol hydrophobe — most often nonyl phenol, also octyl, dodecyl, styrenated phenol or phenol. The aromatic ring plus the alkyl chain gives strong interfacial activity at relatively low use levels. Mid-mole grades around nine EO units are widely used as emulsifiers and wetters. Higher moles (30, 40, 100) are more hydrophilic dispersants or feedstocks for sulphation and phosphation.
Dyna Glycols manufactures these grades to agreed cloud point, hydroxyl value, colour and odour. Low colour and low residual phenol odour matter in coatings and in some personal-care-adjacent uses. Industrial closed-loop cleaning, emulsion polymerisation and agro emulsifiable concentrates still specify this family where the existing homologation is written around it.
When APEO is restricted
Ecolabel and brand policies in several markets restrict nonyl phenol ethoxylates in wash-off and consumer products. That is a specification change, not a quality failure of the alkyl phenol grade. The usual replacement is a Fatty Alcohol Ethoxylates of similar HLB and cloud point. Do not assume a one-for-one drum swap will match foam and electrolyte tolerance; run the application test.
Dyna Glycols will not substitute an APEO-free alcohol ethoxylate into an order that named an alkyl phenol grade unless you ask. Labelling the hydrophobe clearly keeps existing plant recipes intact.
How to specify
Give the hydrophobe, EO moles or cloud point, and whether the grade will be converted to an ether sulphate or phosphate ester. If you are leaving alkyl phenols, say so on the first enquiry and include the current cloud point in the actual liquor, not only in water.
Specification checklist
Put the application, the substrate, temperature, pH and any APEO or formaldehyde limit on the first enquiry. A warehouse nickname is not a specification.
Samples and documents
Request a laboratory sample of the related Ethoxylates grade together with the current SDS and TDS. The certificate of analysis is issued for the shipping lot after manufacture at Kandla SEZ. Once the trial is approved, freeze the identity tests so later drums of this chemistry match the article you evaluated.
