Start with the hydrophobe
Fatty Alcohol Ethoxylates are the main non-ionic workhorses in detergents, personal care, textile and industrial cleaning. The oil-loving part is a fatty alcohol. Natural cuts such as lauryl, ceto-stearyl, oleyl and coconut alcohols behave differently from synthetic oxo alcohols such as tridecyl, decyl or 2-ethylhexanol. Branching on a tridecyl cut often improves low-temperature handling and mineral-oil emulsification. A linear lauryl cut is still the volume choice in household and I&I wash.
Write the carbon cut on the enquiry. “Alcohol ethoxylate” on its own forces the laboratory to guess. If the formula already names an INCI such as Laureth-7 or Ceteareth-20, that is a clearer starting point than a local warehouse nickname.
EO moles, HLB and cloud point
Ethylene oxide moles move the molecule from oil-soluble wetter to water-soluble emulsifier or dispersant. Low moles (about 2–5) stay in oil-rich concentrates. Mid moles (about 6–12) cover most oil-in-water detergency. High moles (20 and above, including 40–100 on tridecyl or ceto-stearyl) behave as hydrophilic dispersants or as intermediates for further conversion.
Cloud point in the real bath matters more than cloud point in distilled water. Salt and alkali pull the cloud point down. Share temperature and electrolyte so the mole can sit in the intended phase. HLB is a useful screen, but two grades with a similar HLB can still differ in foam, odour and residual unreacted alcohol because the hydrophobe and mole distribution differ.
APEO-free wetting
Where alkyl phenol ethoxylates are restricted, a fatty alcohol ethoxylate in a similar HLB band is the usual substitute. Matching cloud point and hydroxyl value is faster than rewriting the whole formula. Dyna Glycols can sample an alcohol-based grade next to an alkyl phenol grade when a mill is changing policy, without swapping families unless you ask.
What to send with a sample request
Name the alcohol, the EO moles or a cloud-point target, pH, colour and whether the grade will later be sulphated or phosphated. For jets and high-shear mixers, mention foam limits. Catalogue moles such as lauryl 7, tridecyl 8 or ceteareth-20 types are routine; intermediate moles are manufactured to specification on the same Ethoxylates plant.
Specification checklist
Put the application, the substrate, temperature, pH and any APEO or formaldehyde limit on the first enquiry. INCI or chemical names, cloud point, hydroxyl value, saponification value and colour are the numbers Dyna Glycols can lock on a TDS for this Ethoxylates topic. A warehouse nickname is not a specification.
Samples and documents
Request a laboratory sample of the related Ethoxylates grade together with the current SDS and TDS. The certificate of analysis is issued for the shipping lot after manufacture at Kandla SEZ. Once the trial is approved, freeze the identity tests so later drums of this chemistry match the article you evaluated.
