Two numbers, two jobs
HLB (hydrophilic–lipophilic balance) is a screen for which phase the surfactant prefers and which oils it is likely to emulsify. Cloud point is the temperature at which a non-ionic aqueous solution hazes as the ethoxylate dehydrates. In chemical development you need both, plus the hydrophobe. Two grades with the same HLB can still differ in foam, odour and residual starter. Two grades with the same cloud point in distilled water can still fail in a salted, alkaline jet.
Dyna Glycols manufactures to the identity tests on the TDS — typically hydroxyl value, cloud point in an agreed medium, pH, colour, water and appearance — not to a nickname that once matched an HLB table in a textbook.
How to use HLB
Low HLB (roughly oil-soluble wetters and W/O emulsifiers) maps to low-mole ethoxylates, sorbitan esters and partial glycerides. Mid HLB covers most oil-in-water detergency and cream emulsifiers (about 6–12 EO on lauryl or tridecyl, 20–30 EO on ceto-stearyl, polysorbate types). High HLB is hydrophilic dispersing and solubilising (20–100 EO, castor 32–40 EO solubilisers, high-mole PEG esters). Required HLB of the oil is the other half: mineral oil, triglyceride and solvent do not share one number.
HLB does not tell you APEO status, foam or hydrolytic stability. An alkyl phenol ethoxylate and a fatty alcohol ethoxylate can share HLB and still be different regulatory articles. Ester-linked fatty acid ethoxylates can share HLB with an alcohol ethoxylate and hydrolyse in strong alkali. Write the family, not only the HLB.
Cloud point in the real bath
Quote cloud point in the liquor you actually run — with salt, builder and alkali — or give that composition so the laboratory can measure it. Salt and alkali pull cloud point down. A grade that is clear in distilled water at 60 °C can haze in a caustic cleaner at 40 °C and lose wetting. For jets and high-shear mixers, the cloud point must sit correctly relative to process temperature or the surfactant dumps onto the fibre or the tank wall.
EO/PO copolymers and reverse-block types have different cloud-point behaviour from straight ethoxylates of similar molecular weight. Specify block order and EO percentage, not only a cloud-point target copied from a conventional alcohol ethoxylate.
What to put on the TDS enquiry
Name the hydrophobe, EO or PO moles or a cloud-point method and medium, required HLB or the oil phase, temperature, electrolyte, pH and foam limit. If your QC laboratory uses a different electrolyte for cloud point or a different solvent for hydroxyl value, write that method so the TDS and the later COA speak the same language. Once a trial lot is approved, freeze those tests so the tenth delivery matches the first approved drum.
Specification checklist
Put the application, the substrate, temperature, pH and any APEO or formaldehyde limit on the first enquiry. INCI or chemical names, cloud point, hydroxyl value, saponification value and colour are the numbers Dyna Glycols can lock on a TDS for this Specification topic. A warehouse nickname is not a specification.
Samples and documents
Request a laboratory sample of the related Specification grade together with the current SDS and TDS. The certificate of analysis is issued for the shipping lot after manufacture at Kandla SEZ. Once the trial is approved, freeze the identity tests so later drums of this chemistry match the article you evaluated.
