Holding a suspension is not wetting it
An anti-settling agent keeps pigment, extender or a polymer particle from forming a hard cake on standing. A polymerisation or latex stabiliser keeps a newly formed emulsion from coagulating under shear or electrolyte. In chemical development those are not the same as a wetting agent used at mill-in. Dyna Glycols’ Paints and Coating Chemicals and Adhesive Chemicals lists separate non-ionic emulsifiers, anionic polymerisation surfactants, defoamers, pigment dispersants, vegetable-oil anti-settling agents and low-foam EO/PO wetters. Write which failure you actually see: hard sediment, syneresis, grit on the mill, or coagulum in the reactor.
Vegetable-oil anti-settling agents are a different duty from a wetting surfactant. Organic neutralizing agents such as triethanolamine sit next to the surfactant package, not instead of it. Do not raise wetter dose to fix settling; you will usually add foam.
Emulsion polymerisation stabilisers
Defined-mole alkyl phenol ethoxylates remain in some polymerisation recipes; fatty alcohol ethoxylates are the APEO-free path. Phosphated ethoxylates appear as anionic polymerisation surfactants. Salts of ethoxylated fatty alcohol sulphates and ammonium salts of PEG-glycol ether sulphates are used in styrene and acrylate systems. State monomer system (VAM, acrylate, styrene-acrylate), particle-size target, electrolyte and whether APEO is allowed.
High HLB, electrolyte tolerance and high-temperature stability are why these grades are chosen. A pigment-grind dispersant is not automatically a polymerisation surfactant. Foam in the reactor needs an EO/PO defoamer that does not kill the latex — share that constraint.
Pigment concentrates and coatings at rest
Modified anionic polymeric esters are used as APEO-free surfactants in organic pigment and carbon-black concentrates, including grades that help prevent gelling and thixotropy. Alcohol ethoxylates appear in textile printing inks and polyester disperse dyes. Aromatic-group non-ionic and anionic amine-salt dispersants are recommended for low-viscosity tinters. EO/PO copolymers also act as low-foam wetting and tint-strength enhancers and help prevent flocculation of organic pigments in aqueous coatings.
Acrylic Polymers in this catalogue are mainly leather retans and finishing binders, not paint rheology modifiers. If the brief is a leather finish that settles, that is a pigment grind plus binder solids problem — say so. Construction and paper slurries add high pH; check hydrolysis of sulfosuccinates and some ether sulphates in that window.
How to specify
Name the solid or monomer, binder, pH, mill type, storage time, APEO policy and the failure (hard cake, flocculation, coagulum, foam). Dyna Glycols will sample a polymerisation ethoxylate or ether sulphate, an EO/PO grade or a polymeric ester dispersant against that interface, not a generic detergent wetter.
Specification checklist
Put the application, the substrate, temperature, pH and any APEO or formaldehyde limit on the first enquiry. INCI or chemical names, cloud point, hydroxyl value, saponification value and colour are the numbers Dyna Glycols can lock on a TDS for this Anti-settling agents topic. A warehouse nickname is not a specification.
Samples and documents
Request a laboratory sample of the related Anti-settling agents grade together with the current SDS and TDS. The certificate of analysis is issued for the shipping lot after manufacture at Kandla SEZ. Once the trial is approved, freeze the identity tests so later drums of this chemistry match the article you evaluated.
