Wetting gets the particle wet; dispersing keeps it apart

A dispersing agent adsorbs on a solid and provides steric or electrostatic repulsion so the slurry does not settle into a hard cake. In chemical development that solid may be a pigment, a disperse dye, an agro technical, carbon black, or vegetable tannin in a leather float. The wrong move is to order “a dispersant” by viscosity of the slurry alone. Particle surface, pH, grind energy and whether the binder is anionic or non-ionic decide the chemistry.

High-mole Fatty Alcohol Ethoxylates and alkyl phenol ethoxylates (30, 40, 100 EO) behave as hydrophilic steric dispersants. They are not mid-mole wetters. Naphthalene and phenol sulfonates in the Sulphates and Sulfonates family supply charge stabilisation in dye and leather systems. Acrylic Polymers and maleic-acrylic copolymers fill and disperse in leather wet-end and in some coatings. Name the particle and the continuous phase before a family is offered.

Pigments, dyes and agro solids

Paints and Coating Chemicals mill bases use non-ionic ethoxylates to wet, then a polymeric or sulfonate dispersant to hold the grind. Vegetable-oil anti-settling agents are a different duty from a wetting surfactant. Emulsion polymerisation may use defined-mole ethoxylates or phosphated ethoxylates as stabilisers — that is a latex duty, not a pigment grind. State monomer system, particle-size target and whether APEO is allowed.

Textile dye-bath dispersing of disperse dyes on polyester is not the same as pigment print dispersing. High-temperature dyeing needs oligomer control as well as a dispersant; a cotton soaper will not do that job. Agro suspoemulsions and wettable powders need a dispersant that survives the electrolyte of the tank mix. Fatty amine ethoxylates appear when the solid needs extra adhesion; high-mole tallow or stearyl amine grades act as hydrophilic dispersants, while two-mole grades remain oil-soluble.

Leather tannins and industrial slurries

Dye-levelling syntans disperse vegetable and resin tannins in the wet end so the float does not crash onto the grain. That is a leather-chemical function written on the order as dye-level, not as a generic industrial dispersant. Paper and construction slurries add high pH and cement electrolyte — sulfosuccinates and some ether sulphates should be checked for hydrolysis in that window.

Do not confuse a dispersant with a defoamer. High-mole ethoxylates can actually stabilize foam in a mill base. If the grind foams, the brief needs a low-foam wetting partner or an EO/PO grade, not a higher dose of the same hydrophilic ethoxylate.

What to send with a sample request

Name the solid (pigment grade, dye class, agro technical, tannin type), mill type, pH, temperature and the binder or float chemistry. Give a current cloud point or sulfonate active if you already run a grade. Dyna Glycols will map that onto a high-mole ethoxylate, a sulfonate or an acrylic rather than guessing from a warehouse nickname.

Specification checklist

Put the application, the substrate, temperature, pH and any APEO or formaldehyde limit on the first enquiry. INCI or chemical names, cloud point, hydroxyl value, saponification value and colour are the numbers Dyna Glycols can lock on a TDS for this Dispersing agents topic. A warehouse nickname is not a specification.

Samples and documents

Request a laboratory sample of the related Dispersing agents grade together with the current SDS and TDS. The certificate of analysis is issued for the shipping lot after manufacture at Kandla SEZ. Once the trial is approved, freeze the identity tests so later drums of this chemistry match the article you evaluated.
