Silicone softeners for textiles are amino-silicone and related silicone emulsions that give inner softness, surface slip, bounce and elastomeric handle on cotton, polyester, blends, denim and knits. Dyna Glycols manufactures amino-silicone bases such as HISIL-LXL and formulated micro, semi-micro, macro and cationic-silicone softeners used in the cotton, denim and synthetic finishing lists.
What silicone softeners are
Silicone softeners for textiles are amino-silicone and related silicone emulsions that give inner softness, surface slip, bounce and elastomeric handle on cotton, polyester, blends, denim and knits. Dyna Glycols manufactures amino-silicone bases such as HISIL-LXL and formulated micro, semi-micro, macro and cationic-silicone softeners used in the cotton, denim and synthetic finishing lists. They are finish products, applied after dye and after peroxide or enzyme have been cleared.
Amino-silicone is substantive to fibre and gives the “inner” soft that a fatty cationic flake cannot. Micro-emulsions penetrate; macro-emulsions sit more on the surface; semi-micro sits between. Cata-silicone grades are designed for whites and for jet application without crashing. Yellowing, shear stability in jets, and compatibility with optical brighteners are the specification points that separate a textile silicone from a generic emulsion.
How Dyna Glycols manufactures silicone softeners
Amino-silicone bases are emulsified to the required particle-size band (micro, semi-micro, macro) with textile-grade emulsifiers, often APEO-free. HISIL-LXL is offered as an amino-silicone base for mills or formulators who emulsify or let down themselves. Ready emulsions are standardised for solids, pH and bath stability.
Shear-stable jet grades and non-yellowing whites are separate manufacturing targets. A silicone that is excellent on a pad may spot in a jet if the emulsifier package is wrong.
Typical grades in this range
Choose base versus ready emulsion, then particle size, and whether the fabric is white.
- HISIL-LXL — amino-silicone base
- Amino micro-silicone with bounciness
- Semi-micro amino-silicone for white as well as softening and elastomeric effect
- Cata-silicone for white and jet-flow; inner smoothness and body
- Special macro-silicone (surface effect)
- Related: concentrated micro-emulsions for denim inner/outer softness; PE-wax/silicone non-yellowing cationics
Where silicone softeners are used
Cotton knits and terry: micro or cata-silicone in the last bath or on the pad for inner softness and bounce. Whites need non-yellowing / cata-silicone or semi-micro grades labelled for white.
Denim and garments: concentrated micro-emulsion after enzyme or stone to restore inner and outer handle. Macro-silicone when a surface slick is wanted without full inner drape.
Polyester and blends: silicone plus antistat/lubricant from the synthetic family; jet-stable cata-silicone where the mill finishes in the same jet as dyeing. Amino 70% types appear in silk/nylon finish after dilution.
How to specify silicone softeners
State fibre, white vs dyed, machine (jet, winch, pad, garment), required inner vs surface handle, yellowing limit, and APEO status. If the mill buys a base, request HISIL-LXL and give the target emulsion solids.
Share shear history (jet time and temperature). For optical-brightened whites, the silicone must be trialled on the actual OBA, not on greige.
Quality, documents and supply
Bases and emulsions are released against appearance, solids, pH and emulsion stability. SDS and COA follow verification. Handle is judged on the mill fabric after drying and, for whites, after heat and storage.
Protect emulsions from frost. Do not add amino-silicone to a strongly anionic bath without a stability check. Follow the SDS for concentrated bases.
Practical notes on silicone softeners
Yellowing of amino-silicone on whites is the usual complaint. Specify a non-yellowing or cata-silicone white grade and keep residual alkali and residual chlorinated bleach off the fabric before finish.
Micro vs macro is particle size and location of the silicone, not “strength”. A macro will not become a micro by dosing higher. If inner softness is missing, change to micro, do not only raise grams per litre.
Jets need shear-stable emulsions. If the bath breaks, spots of oil appear. Ask for jet-flow cata-silicone rather than a pad macro.
HISIL-LXL as a base is for customers who emulsify. Ready-to-use mill emulsions are the default for laundries without an emulsifying plant.
Silicone can reduce wet crock or sewability if overdosed. Pair with PE emulsion or wax from the cotton finish list when needle cutting is a problem.
Dyna Glycols can sample HISIL-LXL plus one micro, one semi-micro white, one cata-jet and one macro so the mill can map handle on a single cotton quality.
Ordering and evaluating silicone softeners
Dyna Glycols supports silicone softeners with laboratory samples, current SDS, TDS and COA from the Kandla SEZ manufacturing network. Tell us the intended application, the substrate, the required moles or molecular weight, and any limits on colour, odour, cloud point, hydroxyl value, pH or residual feedstock. A matching catalogue grade of silicone softeners in the Textile Chemicals family can then be confirmed, or a custom batch can be planned on the ethoxylation, esterification or related plant.
When you evaluate silicone softeners, send the competitor grade if one exists, the bath or emulsion conditions, and the tests your receiving laboratory will run. Pack options for silicone softeners typically include drums, IBCs and bulk where the viscosity and melting point of the selected grade allow safe handling from the Textile Chemicals manufacturing line.
A first order of silicone softeners is easier when the purchase specification lists identity tests, not only a local trade name. Hydroxyl value, saponification value, acid value, cloud point, pH, water, colour and appearance are the numbers the Kandla QA laboratory can lock. If your QC uses a different solvent or a different cloud-point electrolyte for silicone softeners, write that method on the order so the COA speaks the same language.
Custom lots of silicone softeners are quoted after the hydrophobe or acid/alcohol pair, the target analytical window, the annual volume and the pack. Pilot batches are available when a catalogue point in the Textile Chemicals range is close but not exact. Once a trial lot is approved, that TDS should be frozen so the tenth delivery of silicone softeners matches the first approved drum.
Storage of silicone softeners should follow the SDS: keep containers closed, protect hygroscopic grades from moisture, and warm high-melt or high-mole grades until uniform before sampling. FIFO rotation protects colour and odour. If a drum of silicone softeners has frozen or separated in transit, homogenise it before charging a batch; do not decant only the liquid layer.
Application advice for silicone softeners is given against the process you describe, not as a universal recipe. Share machine type, temperature, pH, electrolytes, fibre or hide type, and any ban on APEO, formaldehyde or food-contact lists. Dyna Glycols can then sample silicone softeners alone or as a pair with a sister grade from the same Textile Chemicals family so compatibility is checked in one evaluation.
