Two related processes, two different molecules

Sulphation typically reacts an alcohol or an ethoxylated alcohol with a sulphating agent so the product is a fatty alcohol sulphate or an alkyl ether sulphate. Sulfonation typically introduces a sulfonic acid group onto an aromatic system such as phenol or naphthalene. Buyers often say “sulfonation” for both. The plant and the TDS do not. Dyna Glycols handles sulfonation and sulphation as dedicated chemistry next to ethoxylation, and manufactures Sulphates and Sulfonates and Sulfosuccinates from those routes.

The reason to run the process at all is anionic performance: foam, emulsification and wetting that a non-ionic cannot supply, plus hardness tolerance that soaps lack. Ether sulphates from lauryl, tridecyl, cetearyl or alkyl phenol ethoxylates improve calcium tolerance compared with a soap because the EO spacer is already on the parent ethoxylate. That is why the ethoxylation step is specified before sulphation, not after a complaint about hard-water foam.

What the anion class is used for

Fatty alcohol sulphates and ether sulphates are the volume foamers in personal care and detergents. 2-Ethylhexyl sulphate is a hydrotrope and wetting agent in high-electrolyte cleaners, not a shampoo surfactant. Phenol and naphthalene sulfonates appear in leather and as dye or pigment dispersants. Sulfosuccinates are milder anionics: diesters are very fast wetters; half-esters are milder in wash-off care. They can hydrolyse outside a moderate pH window, so storage pH of the concentrate belongs in the brief.

If the intended product is an ether sulphate, the parent Ethoxylates mole, residual moisture and catalyst traces have to sit inside the sulphation window. Tell the development team at the sample stage. Matching only a finished active-matter percentage without naming the parent hydrophobe is how two “SLES 70” types still feel different in salt thickening and foam.

What to lock on the TDS

State active matter, cation (usually sodium), the parent alcohol or ethoxylate, unsulphated matter, pH, colour and, for ether sulphates, the EO moles on the parent. For sulfonates, name the aromatic backbone. For sulfosuccinates, say diester versus half-ester and the alcohol cut. APEO-free policy matters if the parent was an alkyl phenol ethoxylate; an alcohol-based ether sulphate is the usual substitute path.

Manufacturing sites include dedicated sulfonation capability alongside ethoxylation and esterification. QC laboratories run with the plant so identity tests on a production lot can be compared with the TDS used at evaluation. Once a trial lot is approved, freeze those tests so later drums match the article you evaluated.

How to specify

Give the application (shampoo, I&I wash, metal cleaner, leather, polymerisation), water hardness, pH, foam limit and whether the parent may be an alkyl phenol. Name the anion class you actually need. Dyna Glycols will not substitute a sulfosuccinate into an ether sulphate order, or a sulfonate dispersant into a wash foamer, unless you ask.

Specification checklist

Put the application, the substrate, temperature, pH and any APEO or formaldehyde limit on the first enquiry. INCI or chemical names, cloud point, hydroxyl value, saponification value and colour are the numbers Dyna Glycols can lock on a TDS for this Sulfonation topic. A warehouse nickname is not a specification.

Samples and documents

Request a laboratory sample of the related Sulfonation grade together with the current SDS and TDS. The certificate of analysis is issued for the shipping lot after manufacture at Kandla SEZ. Once the trial is approved, freeze the identity tests so later drums of this chemistry match the article you evaluated.
