Why propylene oxide is added
Propoxylation is alkoxylation with propylene oxide instead of, or as well as, ethylene oxide. The extra methyl group on the PO unit makes the chain more hydrophobic than a comparable EO chain. The practical results in a formula are lower foam, lower cloud point in water, and better solubility in oils and some solvents. That is why Propoxylates are chosen when a formula must stay low-foam on a jet, in a high-pressure cleaner, a rinse aid or an oilfield wetting package.
A straight propoxylate is not a copy of the ethoxylate of the same moles. Wetting speed, emulsification of polar oils and electrolyte tolerance all shift. Development work should trial the PO grade in the real liquor rather than assuming a one-for-one drum swap from an alcohol ethoxylate. Dyna Glycols runs propoxylation on the same stainless-steel alkoxylation assets used for ethoxylation, with distillation and 24/7 QA.
Mixed EO/PO chains and block copolymers
Most industrial “low-foam non-ionics” are mixed alkoxylates: EO and PO added to an alcohol, glycerol, butanol, alkyl phenol or oil in a defined sequence. EO/PO Block Co-Polymers are built that way. Performance depends on block order and EO percentage, not only total molecular weight. Typical duties are low-foam wetting, defoaming-adjacent knockdown, emulsification in oilfield and coatings, and rinse aids.
Random copolymers (oxides fed together) do not match a block copolymer of the same overall EO/PO ratio. Reverse-block types, where the hydrophilic block sits differently on the chain, are specified when the foam and cloud-point window of a conventional block is wrong. Avoid quoting another manufacturer’s grade code; molecular weight, EO content and whether the copolymer is reverse-block are manufactureable targets.
Where the process is used
Textile jets and continuous ranges, bottle wash, metal spray wash, paper de-inking, emulsion polymerisation let-down, and Refinery & Oilfield Chemicals wetting or demulsifier intermediates all use PO-containing surfactants when foam would starve a pump or collapse a flotation cell. Construction and coatings add high pH and electrolyte — check that the chosen block still wets at the use temperature and does not haze out.
Pilot propoxylation is available before scale-up. Hydroxyl value, cloud point, molecular weight (where a polyol starter is used), colour, water and pH are the usual release tests. If the grade will later be phosphated, say so on the first enquiry so residual moisture is held for that step.
How to specify a propoxylation
Name the starter, PO moles or a molecular-weight target, any EO moles and the addition sequence (block, reverse-block, random). Add the foam test, bath temperature, pH and electrolyte. Catalogue alcohol EO/PO types and defined polyalkylene glycol windows are routine; custom sequences are manufactured to the analytical window the receiving laboratory will run.
Specification checklist
Put the application, the substrate, temperature, pH and any APEO or formaldehyde limit on the first enquiry. INCI or chemical names, cloud point, hydroxyl value, saponification value and colour are the numbers Dyna Glycols can lock on a TDS for this Propoxylation topic. A warehouse nickname is not a specification.
Samples and documents
Request a laboratory sample of the related Propoxylation grade together with the current SDS and TDS. The certificate of analysis is issued for the shipping lot after manufacture at Kandla SEZ. Once the trial is approved, freeze the identity tests so later drums of this chemistry match the article you evaluated.
