The reaction

Ethoxylation is the addition of ethylene oxide to a starter in a closed, agitated stainless-steel reactor under controlled temperature and pressure. The average number of EO units on the chain is the “mole” on the purchase order. Lower moles stay more oil-soluble and are used as emulsifiers, coupling agents or intermediates for ether sulphates and phosphate esters. Higher moles wet and disperse more readily in water. Narrow-range ethoxylates give a tighter homolog distribution, which can improve consistency in sensitive formulations.

Dyna Glycols’ manufacturing strength is this chemistry: more than 50,000 MT per year of ethoxylation and propoxylation capacity, with reactors from 3,000 kg to 25,000 kg. Dedicated units, distillation and 24/7 QA support fatty alcohol, alkyl phenol, fatty acid, oil and fatty amine ethoxylates, plus Polyethylene-glycol and Polysorbates. Most of the catalogue is based on this process.

What EO moles change in the formula

Fatty Alcohol Ethoxylates walk from oil-soluble wetters at about 2–5 EO to detergent emulsifiers at 6–12 EO and hydrophilic dispersants at 20–100 EO on tridecyl or ceto-stearyl cuts. Alkyl Phenol Ethoxylates around nine EO units are industrial workhorse emulsifiers where they are still specified; NP-30 to NP-100 types are hydrophilic. Oil Ethoxylates of castor around 32–40 EO are classic solubilisers. Cloud point in the real bath matters more than cloud point in distilled water, because salt and alkali pull it down.

HLB is a useful screen, but two grades with a similar HLB can still differ in foam, odour and residual unreacted starter because the hydrophobe and mole distribution differ. Write the carbon cut and the EO moles, or an INCI such as Laureth-7 or Ceteareth-20. “Alcohol ethoxylate” on its own forces the laboratory to guess.

Control, residuals and second-step chemistry

Release tests are typically appearance, hydroxyl value, cloud point, pH, colour, water and, for ester-linked grades, saponification and acid value. Residual ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane are controlled to the limits the application needs — cosmetic and pharma-adjacent uses should state those limits on the enquiry. If the ethoxylate will be sulphated or phosphated, residual moisture and catalyst traces have to stay inside that second process window.

Polysorbates are ethoxylated sorbitan esters, usually around 20 moles of EO, made on the same ethoxylation plant after the sorbitan ester has been formed by esterification. PEG is ethoxylation of water or ethylene glycol to an average molecular weight; it is not a fatty alcohol ethoxylate of similar viscosity. Keep those identities separate on the order.

How to brief an ethoxylation

Name the hydrophobe, the EO moles or a cloud-point target, pH, colour and whether the grade will later be sulphated or phosphated. For jets and high-shear mixers, mention foam limits. Custom moles between catalogue points are routine. Pilot ethoxylation is available before the main reactor is used. Once a trial lot is approved, freeze those identity tests so the tenth delivery matches the first approved drum.

Specification checklist

Put the application, the substrate, temperature, pH and any APEO or formaldehyde limit on the first enquiry. INCI or chemical names, cloud point, hydroxyl value, saponification value and colour are the numbers Dyna Glycols can lock on a TDS for this Ethoxylation topic. A warehouse nickname is not a specification.

Samples and documents

Request a laboratory sample of the related Ethoxylation grade together with the current SDS and TDS. The certificate of analysis is issued for the shipping lot after manufacture at Kandla SEZ. Once the trial is approved, freeze the identity tests so later drums of this chemistry match the article you evaluated.
