The reaction

Phosphation is the conversion of a hydroxyl-bearing starter — often an ethoxylated fatty alcohol or alkyl phenol — into a phosphate ester. The product is typically a mixture of mono- and di-esters with some residual phosphoric acidity. That ratio is not a nuisance; it is the specification. Mono-rich grades hydrotrope and wet differently from di-rich grades. Residual acidity changes corrosion inhibition and the amount of alkali the cleaner will need.

Dyna Glycols manufactures Phosphate Esters as part of the same anionic capability that includes sulphation. The parent ethoxylate is made on the alkoxylation plant, then phosphated. If you already run a named ethoxylate that must be converted, send that mole, cloud point and water spec so the phosphation feed is in window.

What phosphate esters do in a formula

They emulsify, inhibit corrosion, wet pigments and work in alkaline cleaners and metal-working fluids. Metal and Electroplating Chemicals baths use them where a non-ionic would not hold in high electrolyte or would not protect the metal. Coatings and emulsion polymerisation use phosphated ethoxylates as anionic polymerisation surfactants. Agro and industrial cleaners use them as hydrotropes that keep non-ionics in solution at high builder levels.

Foam is variable: some phosphate esters foam more than the parent ethoxylate, some less. Do not assume a low-foam ethoxylate stays low-foam after phosphation. Share the metal, pH, whether the fluid is oil-in-water or neat oil, and the foam limit of the machine. APEO-free briefs should start from a fatty alcohol ethoxylate parent rather than an alkyl phenol ethoxylate parent.

Control points

Acid value or residual acidity, mono versus di ester ratio, pH of a specified dilution, colour, water, and identity of the parent (alcohol cut and EO moles, or alkyl phenol moles) belong on the TDS. Neutralised salts (for example amine or potassium salts) are a different article from the free acid ester — say which form the formula uses. Hydrolytic stability in hot alkaline cleaners should be checked in the real bath; the phosphate ester can lose performance if the process is outside the intended pH window.

Pilot quantities can be phosphated from a trial ethoxylate before the main reactor is committed. Once the cleaner or polymerisation recipe is approved, freeze the parent mole and the acidity window so later lots match the evaluation.

How to specify a phosphation

Name the parent hydrophobe and EO moles, target mono/di ratio or a current acid value, the cation if the ester is sold as a salt, the metal or pigment, pH and oil versus water continuous phase. Dyna Glycols will map that onto a phosphate ester rather than offering a sulphate or a non-ionic wetter unless the brief is actually that duty.

Specification checklist

Put the application, the substrate, temperature, pH and any APEO or formaldehyde limit on the first enquiry. INCI or chemical names, cloud point, hydroxyl value, saponification value and colour are the numbers Dyna Glycols can lock on a TDS for this Phosphation topic. A warehouse nickname is not a specification.

Samples and documents

Request a laboratory sample of the related Phosphation grade together with the current SDS and TDS. The certificate of analysis is issued for the shipping lot after manufacture at Kandla SEZ. Once the trial is approved, freeze the identity tests so later drums of this chemistry match the article you evaluated.
