Two polymer stories, one development laboratory

Polymerisation in this catalogue is not a generic plastics plant. The research centre has experience in polymerisation and in copolymerisation of functionalised polyalkylene glycols next to alkoxylation. The products that reach customers are Acrylic Polymers for leather and aqueous finishing binders, and EO/PO Block Co-Polymers built by adding ethylene oxide and propylene oxide in a defined sequence. Treating those as one “polymer” on an RFQ sends the sample to the wrong reactor.

Acrylic and maleic-acrylic copolymers fill and tighten leather in the wet end. Aqueous polyacrylate dispersions form the film in impregnation and base coat. EO/PO copolymers are surfactants: low-foam wetters, defoamers, emulsifiers and rinse aids. PEG manufacture is ethoxylation of a glycol starter to an average molecular weight; it is a polyether, not an acrylic, and not a fatty alcohol ethoxylate of similar viscosity.

Acrylics in leather

Wet-end acrylics appear as liquid or powder syntans, including maleic-acrylic grades in WET END - SYNTANS (Liquids). They fill empty areas, keep grain fine, and improve wet-toggling on upholstery. Lightfastness is a reason to choose an acrylic retan over some vegetable extracts on pale articles. Solids, pH and film softness are the real specification.

Finishing - Binders are aqueous polyacrylate dispersions. Very soft low-tack, medium-soft, and fine-particle impregnation grades are not interchangeable. They may be blended with polyurethane dispersions for adhesion and wet rub. Solids (often around 20–37% depending on grade) and pH belong on the TDS. Binders are not lacquers; nitrocellulose tops and wax emulsions sit on top of the acrylic season. Specify the article, full grain versus corrected, and tack limits. A spray-out on the customer crust is the approval, not a viscosity number alone.

EO/PO copolymerisation

Block co-polymers of EO and PO are used where a balance of wetting, defoaming or emulsification is needed — including oilfield, coatings and industrial cleaning. The sequence and ratio of the blocks, not only the total molecular weight, decide performance. Specify molecular weight, EO content and whether the copolymer is a reverse-block type. Pilot alkoxylation reactors move a development copolymer into scale-up before the main vessels are used.

Polyethylene-glycol grades from 200 to 20,000 molecular weight are a separate ethoxylation programme: solvents, humectants, ointment bases, tablet binders and process aids. Hydroxyl value falls as molecular weight rises. Do not confuse PEG with an EO/PO block copolymer of similar appearance.

How to specify a polymerisation

For leather, say wet-end fill versus finish binder, article, lightfastness and solids/pH window. For EO/PO, name starter, molecular weight, EO percentage and block order. For PEG, name average molecular weight and the documentation set (industrial versus tighter pharma-adjacent). Dyna Glycols issues SDS, TDS and lot COA against that named chemistry, not against a historic warehouse nickname.

Specification checklist

Put the application, the substrate, temperature, pH and any APEO or formaldehyde limit on the first enquiry. INCI or chemical names, cloud point, hydroxyl value, saponification value and colour are the numbers Dyna Glycols can lock on a TDS for this Polymerisation topic. A warehouse nickname is not a specification.

Samples and documents

Request a laboratory sample of the related Polymerisation grade together with the current SDS and TDS. The certificate of analysis is issued for the shipping lot after manufacture at Kandla SEZ. Once the trial is approved, freeze the identity tests so later drums of this chemistry match the article you evaluated.
