A lubricant is a film, an emollient is a skin feel

A lubricating agent reduces friction on yarn, fabric, metal or leather fibre. An emollient is the personal-care version of that film on skin. In chemical development both often come from Fatty Acid Esters, Oil Ethoxylates, partial glycerides or wax emulsions — not from a detergent ethoxylate. Dyna Glycols manufactures those esters and ethoxylates, plus Fatliquirs that lubricate collagen after tannage, and PE or modified wax emulsions that improve sewability on textiles.

The brief must say whether the film should stay (skin, leather interior, sewability) or rinse (spin finish that must scour, metal-working that must degrease). A fatliquor that stays in leather is a failure if it is used as a knitting oil that must wash off.

Esters and oil ethoxylates

Fatty Acid Esters such as butyl, octyl, cetyl or oleyl esters of stearic, oleic, lauric or palmitic acid are emollients, textile lubricants, rust-inhibitor partners and pigment-carrying fluids. They are not primary detergents. Pour point, acid value and iodine value (for unsaturated cuts) belong on the specification. Alkyl Benzoates are light spreading esters for sun filters and dry skin feel; they also wet pigments in colour cosmetics. They do not replace a water-phase emulsifier.

Glyceryl Esters such as glyceryl oleate lubricate and help water-in-oil emulsions. Castor and other Oil Ethoxylates add a lubricating or emollient character while they emulsify. Low-mole grades stay oil-soluble; high-mole grades become hydrophilic. Matching the oil feedstock to the oil being carried often improves freeze–thaw more than chasing HLB alone.

Leather fatliquors and textile sewability

Fatliquors lubricate collagen after tannage. Anionic synthetics, vegetable-oil concentrates, sulphited fish-oil types, weakly anionic pastes, and cationic or non-ionic tops are different tools. Lightfast synthetics suit whites and anilines. Sulphited fish-oil types give fluffy milled garment. Cationic tops on an anionic fat bath can crash the emulsion if they are dumped in without a process step. Specify ionic type and % on shaved weight.

Textile PE emulsion and modified wax emulsions are APEO-free sewability aids: they reduce needle cutting and improve knitability. They are not handle silicones. Pair them with a cationic or silicone softener when both slip and softness are required. Dye-bath lubricants and anticrease polymers are process lubricants in the machine, not a finish film — name the step.

How to specify

Name the surface (skin, yarn, hide, steel), whether the film must stay or scour off, temperature, and any APEO, colour or lightfastness limit. For esters, name the acid–alcohol pair. For leather, name ionic type. Dyna Glycols will sample a fatty ester, an oil ethoxylate, a fatliquor or a PE/wax emulsion against that film duty.

Specification checklist

Put the application, the substrate, temperature, pH and any APEO or formaldehyde limit on the first enquiry. INCI or chemical names, cloud point, hydroxyl value, saponification value and colour are the numbers Dyna Glycols can lock on a TDS for this Lubricants topic. A warehouse nickname is not a specification.
