Demulsifying is the opposite job to emulsifying

A demulsifying agent destabilises a water-in-oil emulsion so water drops coalesce and settle. In chemical development that is a different brief from an emulsifying agent, even when both molecules are ethoxylates. Ordering “an oilfield surfactant” without saying split versus keep-together is how a wetting ethoxylate ends up in a treater that needed a resin demulsifier. Dyna Glycols manufactures demulsifier intermediates on the same alkoxylation plant used for Alkoxylates and EO/PO Block Co-Polymers; the finished bottle in the field is often a blend the customer or a blender formulates from those intermediates.

Performance depends on crude type, water cut, temperature, asphaltene and solids load, and residence time in the separator. A bottle test on the actual crude is the approval, not a cloud point in distilled water. Share those process facts on the first enquiry.

Resin ethoxylates and EO/PO intermediates

The Refinery & Oilfield Chemicals demulsifier list is built on alkyl phenol-formaldehyde resins that are then ethoxylated: nonyl phenol-formaldehyde resins at about 20, 30, 40 or 48% EO, and dodecyl phenol-formaldehyde resins at about 30 or 40% EO. The resin hydrophobe plus the EO content set how the molecule sits at the crude–water interface. Changing the phenol (nonyl versus dodecyl) or the EO percentage is a real formulation change; it is not a nickname swap.

Where alkyl phenol chemistry is restricted, say so on the enquiry. Alcohol-based EO/PO routes and other alkoxylates can be sampled, but they are not assumed drop-in copies of a nonyl phenol-formaldehyde resin ethoxylate. Do not identify the need by another company’s demulsifier code; EO percentage, resin type and a bottle-test crude sample are manufactureable targets.

EO/PO copolymers in the same package

Propylene glycol propoxylated then ethoxylated (EO/PO copolymers) and diethylene triamine propoxylated then ethoxylated sit next to the resin ethoxylates on the oilfield list. They adjust wetting, drop size and the speed of water knockout. Block order and EO percentage matter more than total molecular weight. Reverse-block and conventional blocks behave differently; specify which architecture the current formula uses.

These grades also appear as low-foam wetters and defoamers in other industries. For a demulsifier brief, write “crude dehydration / water knockout” so the laboratory does not offer a rinse-aid copolymer by default. Foam in the separator is a separate limit: some EO/PO grades that split well still foam in the water leg.

How to specify a demulsifier intermediate

Name the crude or a comparable bottle-test sample, water cut, treating temperature, residence time, and whether the system is a production separator, desalting or a refinery dehydrator. Give the current resin type and EO percentage if you already run one, plus any ban on alkyl phenol chemistry. Dyna Glycols will sample a resin ethoxylate or an EO/PO copolymer against that window. Once the bottle test is approved, freeze EO content, viscosity and the identity tests on the TDS so later lots match the blend you evaluated.

Specification checklist

Put the application, the substrate, temperature, pH and any APEO or formaldehyde limit on the first enquiry. INCI or chemical names, cloud point, hydroxyl value, saponification value and colour are the numbers Dyna Glycols can lock on a TDS for this Demulsifying agents topic. A warehouse nickname is not a specification.

Samples and documents

Request a laboratory sample of the related Demulsifying agents grade together with the current SDS and TDS. The certificate of analysis is issued for the shipping lot after manufacture at Kandla SEZ. Once the trial is approved, freeze the identity tests so later drums of this chemistry match the article you evaluated.
