A thickener is not a binder
A printing thickener holds the paste on the screen and sets strike-through. A binder fixes pigment to the fibre. A fixer after-treats dye. Printing Chemicals list dispersing, penetration, fixation and loop accelerators, kerosene-substitute pigment thickeners, binders, formaldehyde-free paste emulsifier-cum-fixers, and wash-off. Mixing those names on one RFQ is how a mill gets a binder when the paste was flushing, or a thickener when formaldehyde on the garment was the complaint.
Pigment, reactive and disperse prints fail for different reasons. State print type and method (flat, rotary, continuous) before the chemistry.
Leaving kerosene
Kerosene emulsion pigment prints are converted to aqueous substitutes to cut solvent odour and fire load. Dose the substitute thickener by dry content, not by equal wet weight of the old kerosene paste. Solids are not the same; equal wet weight gives a weak film or a harsh handle. Trial strike-through, colour value and wash on the actual screen mesh and squeegee pressure.
Formaldehyde-free printing-paste emulsifier-fixers exist where the garment has a formaldehyde cap. They are print-paste articles, not exhaust dye-fixers. Loop accelerators help disperse-print yield; they are not pigment binders. Instant wetting-cum-softening and instant neutralizing grades are for continuous printing ranges, not for a table printer.
Wash-off after the print
Stained whites after wash-off are a soaping problem, not always a thickener problem. Fibre-specific wash-off matters: nylon, wool and silk grounds are not a cotton soaper job. Reducing clear and all-in-one reduction clear sit next to the thickener on the print page. Limits on kerosene and formaldehyde belong on the first enquiry together with the print type.
How to specify
Name print type, method, whether you are leaving kerosene, current solids, mesh, and formaldehyde or solvent limits. Dyna Glycols will sample a kerosene-substitute thickener, a binder or a formaldehyde-free paste emulsifier-fixer against that paste, not a cotton soaper or a leather acrylic binder by default.
Specification checklist
Put the application, the substrate, temperature, pH and any APEO or formaldehyde limit on the first enquiry. INCI or chemical names, cloud point, hydroxyl value, saponification value and colour are the numbers Dyna Glycols can lock on a TDS for this Printing thickeners topic. A warehouse nickname is not a specification.
Samples and documents
Request a laboratory sample of the related Printing thickeners grade together with the current SDS and TDS. The certificate of analysis is issued for the shipping lot after manufacture at Kandla SEZ. Once the trial is approved, freeze the identity tests so later drums of this chemistry match the article you evaluated.
