Solubilisation is not emulsification

A solubilising agent takes a small amount of oil — fragrance, essential oil, UV filter, agro solvent or a poorly soluble active — into a transparent or translucent micellar solution. An emulsifier makes a milky cream. In development, treating those as the same request produces hazy “solubilised” waters that are actually dilute emulsions. Clarity temperature, oil loading and the required HLB belong on the first enquiry.

Dyna Glycols’ usual solubilisers are Oil Ethoxylates of castor and hydrogenated castor (often 32–40 EO, with higher moles for more hydrophilic work), Polysorbates 20 and 80 types, and high-HLB Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) Esters. Polyethylene-glycol itself is a solvent and humectant, not a surfactant; PEG 400 is a vehicle, not a solubiliser for perfume oil. Keep those identities separate on the order.

Fragrance, personal care and pharma-adjacent use

Perfumery Chemicals typically need hydrophilic solubilisers. Share the oil to be solubilised and the temperature at which the water must stay clear. Clouding on cooling often means HLB or use level is wrong, not that the lot failed. Hydrogenated castor oil ethoxylates are paler and more oxidatively stable than unhydrogenated castor. Alkyl benzoates can fix fragrance in an oil phase; they do not replace a water-phase solubiliser.

Pharma Chemicals overlap on PEG 400 as a solvent, higher PEG as ointment bases, and polysorbate 80 or 20 types as solubilisers. If a pharmacopoeia-style test list applies, attach it. Industrial PEG and a tighter documentation grade are not the same release package. Colour, acid value, residual ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane limits should be written when the use is topical or oral-adjacent.

Agro oils and industrial concentrates

Castor, coconut and soya oil ethoxylates solubilise or emulsify pesticide oils depending on moles and oil loading. A clear microemulsion at 5% oil can break at 20%. State the oil, the required appearance (clear, opalescent, white EC bloom) and hard-water test. PEG-free briefs should name polyglycerol esters rather than polysorbates. They need a full trial; they are not a one-for-one drum swap.

Low-mole oil ethoxylates remain oil-soluble coupling agents. High-mole coconut oil ethoxylates (80–150 EO) are hydrophilic dispersants and solubilisers. Matching the oil feedstock to the oil being dissolved often improves freeze–thaw and bloom behaviour more than chasing a single HLB number.

How to specify a solubiliser

Give the oil or active, target loading, continuous phase, clarity temperature, pH and any PEG-free or APEO-free claim. Name an INCI such as PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil or Polysorbate 80 if the formula already uses it. Dyna Glycols manufactures to saponification value, hydroxyl value, acid value, colour and pH on the Kandla ethoxylation plant.

Specification checklist

Put the application, the substrate, temperature, pH and any APEO or formaldehyde limit on the first enquiry. INCI or chemical names, cloud point, hydroxyl value, saponification value and colour are the numbers Dyna Glycols can lock on a TDS for this Solubilising agents topic. A warehouse nickname is not a specification.

Samples and documents

Request a laboratory sample of the related Solubilising agents grade together with the current SDS and TDS. The certificate of analysis is issued for the shipping lot after manufacture at Kandla SEZ. Once the trial is approved, freeze the identity tests so later drums of this chemistry match the article you evaluated.
