Phosphate esters
Phosphate Esters are often made from ethoxylated alcohols or alkyl phenols that are then phosphated. They emulsify, inhibit corrosion, wet pigments and work in alkaline cleaners and metal-working fluids. Mono- versus di-ester ratio, residual acidity and the starting ethoxylate moles all change hydrotroping and foam. Share the metal, pH and whether the fluid is oil-in-water or neat oil.
Sulphates and sulfonates
Sulphates and Sulfonates include fatty alcohol sulphates, alkyl ether sulphates from ethoxylated alcohols, and phenol or naphthalene sulfonates used in leather and as dispersants. Ether sulphates from lauryl, tridecyl, cetearyl or alkyl phenol ethoxylates improve hardness tolerance compared with a soap. 2-Ethylhexyl sulphate is a hydrotrope and wetting agent in high-electrolyte cleaners. State active matter, cation (usually sodium) and the parent ethoxylate if the sulphate is an ether sulphate.
Sulfosuccinates
Sulfosuccinates are mild anionics used as wetters and foamers in personal care, emulsion polymerisation and some industrial cleaners. Diester types are very fast wetters at low use levels; half-ester types are milder in wash-off care. They can hydrolyse outside a moderate pH window, so storage pH of the concentrate belongs in the brief.
