Clarity in salt is the specification

A hydrotrope or coupling agent keeps surfactants, solvents or builders dissolved in a concentrate that would otherwise split or haze. In chemical development that is a different duty from wetting or foam. A high-foam ether sulphate that looks “active” in water can salt out in a caustic bottle-wash. Dyna Glycols manufactures the usual industrial tools: 2-ethylhexyl sulphate in the Sulphates and Sulfonates family, Phosphate Esters that hydrotrope in alkaline cleaners, and low-mole Fatty Alcohol Ethoxylates or Oil Ethoxylates that couple oil-rich blends.

The brief is incomplete without electrolyte type (caustic, silicate, phosphate, brine), active-matter target, storage temperature and whether the concentrate must stay clear or only redisperse on dilution. A hydrotrope that foams in a spray washer is the wrong grade even if the bottle stays clear.

Anionic hydrotropes

2-Ethylhexyl sulphate is a hydrotrope and wetter in high-electrolyte cleaners and Metal and Electroplating Chemicals baths. It is not a shampoo foamer. State active matter, cation (usually sodium) and the pH window. Phosphate esters made from ethoxylated alcohols or alkyl phenols hydrotrope non-ionics at high builder levels while they emulsify and inhibit corrosion. Mono- versus di-ester ratio and residual acidity change both coupling and the alkali demand of the cleaner. An APEO-free brief should start from a fatty alcohol ethoxylate parent.

Ether sulphates from lauryl or tridecyl ethoxylates improve hardness tolerance in wash, but they are foamers first. Do not specify them as the hydrotrope in a jet or spray cleaner unless foam is actually wanted.

Low-mole ethoxylates as couplers

Low-mole 2-ethylhexanol and tridecyl alcohol ethoxylates, and low-mole oleic or castor oil ethoxylates, behave as oil-soluble wetters and coupling agents in concentrates. They are not mid-mole detergent emulsifiers. Cloud point in distilled water is a poor predictor; salt and alkali pull it down. Quote the real concentrate composition so the mole can sit in the intended phase.

Liquid PEG is sometimes used as a solvent and hydrotrope partner in detergents. It is not a surfactant. If the formula needs PEG-free, say so and use a sulphate or phosphate-ester hydrotrope instead.

How to specify

Give the builder and electrolyte map, target appearance (clear, opalescent), storage temperature, pH, foam limit and whether the hydrotrope must also inhibit corrosion or wet metal. Dyna Glycols will sample 2-ethylhexyl sulphate, a phosphate ester or a low-mole ethoxylate against that concentrate rather than a high-foam wash surfactant.

Specification checklist

Put the application, the substrate, temperature, pH and any APEO or formaldehyde limit on the first enquiry. INCI or chemical names, cloud point, hydroxyl value, saponification value and colour are the numbers Dyna Glycols can lock on a TDS for this Hydrotropes topic. A warehouse nickname is not a specification.

Samples and documents

Request a laboratory sample of the related Hydrotropes grade together with the current SDS and TDS. The certificate of analysis is issued for the shipping lot after manufacture at Kandla SEZ. Once the trial is approved, freeze the identity tests so later drums of this chemistry match the article you evaluated.
