Water-binding is not surface activity
A humectant is hygroscopic: it holds water in a cream, a pigment paste, a tablet or a print paste so the film does not dry out too fast. In chemical development that is a polyol or polyether duty, not a surfactant duty. Dyna Glycols manufactures Polyethylene-glycol by molecular weight, Polyglycerol by degree of polymerisation, and glycerol ethoxylates used in low-VOC waterborne pigment preparations. Ordering “an ethoxylate” for a humectant brief is how a fatty alcohol wetter ends up in a paste that needed PEG 400.
PEG 200–600 are liquids used as solvents and humectants. PEG 1000–8000 are waxy solids used as ointment bases, tablet binders, plasticisers and mould-release aids. Hydroxyl value falls as molecular weight rises. Do not confuse PEG with a fatty alcohol ethoxylate of similar viscosity, and do not confuse it with polypropylene glycol or with an EO/PO block copolymer.
Personal care, pharma and PEG-free routes
Pharma Chemicals overlap on PEG 400 as a solvent and higher PEG as ointment bases. If a pharmacopoeia-style test list applies, attach it. Industrial PEG and a tighter documentation grade are not the same release package. Colour, water, residual ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane limits should be written for topical or oral-adjacent use.
Polyglycerol contains no ethylene oxide in the backbone. Formulators who need polyol functionality without ethoxylation specify it by hydroxyl value, viscosity, water content and average degree (for example polyglycerol-3, -4, -6, -10). Its fatty-acid esters are emulsifiers; the polyol itself is the humectant. Tight water specs are needed if the customer will esterify in their own plant.
Coatings, inks and textile pastes
Paints and Coating Chemicals use glycerol ethoxylates in waterborne pigment preparations as alternatives to ethylene glycol, propylene glycol and low-molecular-weight glycol ethers when VOC is limited. Higher-MW PEG is used the same way. Inks, dyes and textile pastes use PEG for hygroscopicity so screens and rollers do not crust. That is not pigment wetting — pair a humectant with a separate dispersant if the grind settles.
Share whether the paste must stay open on a screen, whether freeze–thaw matters, and any VOC or PEG-free claim. A castor oil ethoxylate solubiliser is not a humectant; a PEG 400 is not a fragrance solubiliser.
How to specify
Name the job (skin humectant, ointment solvent, pigment open-time, tablet binder), the preferred chemistry (PEG molecular weight, polyglycerol degree, glycerol ethoxylate moles), water spec and documentation set. Specification checklist

Samples and documents
Request a laboratory sample of the related Humectants grade together with the current SDS and TDS. The certificate of analysis is issued for the shipping lot after manufacture at Kandla SEZ. Once the trial is approved, freeze the identity tests so later drums of this chemistry match the article you evaluated.
