Two films, two industries
Film-forming on this website usually means either a corrosion-inhibiting amine or imidazoline film on steel, or an acrylic binder film on leather crust. Both create a continuous layer; the chemistry and the brief are not interchangeable. Ordering “a film-former” without metal versus hide is how a tallow amine ethoxylate is offered into a finishing season that needed VENRES-type acrylic.
Dyna Glycols manufactures both families on existing plants: alkoxylation and amidification for inhibitor bases, polymerisation for leather acrylics. Application performance still belongs to the formulator or tannery.
Corrosion film-formers
Fatty Amine Ethoxylates — especially low-mole and ~10-mole tallow amine or diamine grades — adsorb on steel and slow attack in oil-soluble or water-dispersible packages. Amido imidazolines on Refinery & Oilfield Chemicals and Metal and Electroplating Chemicals are classic film-forming CI intermediates, often salted for water solubility. Phosphate esters add inhibition in alkaline metal cleaners while they emulsify.
Name the metal, continuous phase, temperature and acid gases. A leather acrylic will not protect a pipeline.
Leather finish binders as films
Acrylic Polymers and finishing binders under Leather Chemicals form the resin film that carries pigment and lacquer on shoe upper, upholstery and garment articles. Solids, pH, film hardness and lightfastness are the specification — not a paint-latex nickname. Cationic dye fixers can block later anionic binder coats; drain and rinse before finish if fixer was used.
A finish season also uses wax emulsions and lacquers. The binder is one layer, not the whole stack.
How to specify a film-former
Write corrosion versus leather finish in the first line. For corrosion: metal, fluid, temperature, O2/H2S/CO2. For leather: article, tannage, hardness and lightfastness. Dyna Glycols will sample an amine ethoxylate, imidazoline or acrylic binder against that film duty.
Specification checklist
Put the application, the substrate, temperature, pH and any APEO or formaldehyde limit on the first enquiry. INCI or chemical names, cloud point, hydroxyl value, saponification value and colour are the numbers Dyna Glycols can lock on a TDS for this Film-formers topic. A warehouse nickname is not a specification.
Samples and documents
Request a laboratory sample of the related Film-formers grade together with the current SDS and TDS. The certificate of analysis is issued for the shipping lot after manufacture at Kandla SEZ. Once the trial is approved, freeze the identity tests so later drums of this chemistry match the article you evaluated.
