Dyna Glycols’ manufacturing strength is in ethoxylation and propoxylation. Adding ethylene oxide (EO) or propylene oxide (PO) to a hydrophobe — a fatty alcohol, acid, amine or similar starter — is how many non-ionic surfactants are made. The same Kandla plant also builds EO/PO block copolymers when a formula needs a defined balance of wetting, foam and oil solubility.
Why EO moles matter
The average number of EO units on the chain changes water solubility, HLB and cloud point. Lower ethoxylates tend to be more oil-soluble and are used as emulsifiers or intermediates. Higher ethoxylates wet and disperse more readily in water. Narrow-range ethoxylates give a tighter homolog distribution, which can improve consistency in sensitive formulations. Cloud point should be quoted in the real bath, because salt and alkali pull it down compared with distilled water.
EO/PO block co-polymers
Block co-polymers of EO and PO are used where a balance of wetting, defoaming or emulsification is needed — including oilfield, coatings and industrial cleaning. The sequence and ratio of the blocks, not only the total molecular weight, decide performance. Specify molecular weight, EO content and whether the copolymer is a reverse-block type. A third-party grade code is not required; the analytical window is what the plant will manufacture to.
From lab to plant
Pilot alkoxylation reactors let us move a development grade into scale-up for customer trials. Production is supported by QC laboratories that run with the plant, so in-process and finished-goods testing stay close to the reaction. Hydroxyl value, cloud point, pH, colour and water are the usual release tests unless the customer TDS adds more.
What to put on the purchase specification
Name the hydrophobe, the EO or PO moles or a cloud-point target, and whether the grade will later be sulphated or phosphated. Mention foam limits for jets and high-shear mixers. Custom moles between catalogue points are routine. Once a trial lot is approved, freeze those identity tests so the tenth delivery matches the first approved drum.
